Backpack questions

DS has one of those animal Skip Hop backpacks. I'm wondering if it's big enough for preschool.

I know he will need an extra change of clothing. What else does a preschooler transport in there? He is only attending two mornings a week, no lunch.

Re: Backpack questions

  • DS's school used buckets instead of backpacks, but he really didn't carry anything but a water bottle and a folder to and from school each day (also two mornings a week last year).

You'll need room in the backpack to fit projects in there without them getting folded up.  I'd see if you can fit a normal sized piece of construction paper into his current backpack.

Yeah, I can't. Frankly, I am over thinking this, but I emailed his teacher to see if she had any preferences. I think the change of clothing is kept in the backpack, and if there is a folder or anything else, he would need something bigger.

  • My girls have kept an extra pair of clothes (including socks and undies) and a sweatshirt and that is about it.  This year one of my girls is not allowed to keep a bag at school (daycare) so they just have the clothes in a cubby and my older DD in PreK brought hers back and forth but didn't have anything extra in it but it was nice to have the bag to bring her projects home from school in.  For Kindy they say the bag needs to big enough to keep a 3 ring binder and she will have a separate lunch bag.

  • We got DD1 a small (not preschool size!) PBK backpack last year. She's been using it for summer camp (basically summer preschool) and will use it again this school year.

She had a Skip-Hop zoo pack and it wasn't big enough. DD2 uses it now. :) We were told to bring something big enough to fit a folder or 8x11 paper without being smushed.

Granted, what she usually carries -- a spare change of clothes and her water bottle -- would fit in the zoo pack just fine, but for book orders, photo forms, art, etc. that come home, the bigger backpack is better.

  • We are looking to "upgrade" to a small Lands End backpack for Preschool. It will be big enough to hold clothes and anything else that he needs but small enough that he can wear it.

  • My DD keeps a complete change of clothes and a light jacket in her backpack, along with a folder. I would make sure that whatever you use is big enough for a folder at least.

  • I got the girls the LandsEnd Small size (not preschool size) backpack last year when they started preschool 2 mornings a week. It holds a standard 9x12 2 pocket file folder, which is what our school uses as the communication folder for parents. It was not too big for them and worked out really well. The bag has held up so well we are going to use it again this year for Pre-K which is 5 mornings a week. I will get them a new bag in the bigger size for the start of Kindergarten. My BFF told me about the Lands End bags. They don't have as many cute color patterns designs as PBK, but I was able to get one in pink and one in purple for my twins with their names embroidered on them. They were one sale at the end of July and I had a coupon code and got free shipping. So I ended up paying $15 for each bag and they are holding up for 2 years. Can't beat that.

  • DD#1 had the preschool-sized PBK backpack last year when preschool started and we quickly found out it was too small. For the first part of the year she carried an extra set of clothes, which wasn't too much of a problem, but the biggest issue was fitting her projects in there. We were constantly having to crunch things to fit them in there and finally about halfway through the year we got a "regular" sized backpack and that worked great for the rest of the year. She picked out a Lands End one this year for kinder. I can't remember if it's small or med. but it fits her pretty well and has plenty of room.

  • DS has that backpack (the dog one). It's too small.  He brings his blankets from nap home on Fridays. He also brings home a ton of art. I would go with something just a little bit bigger
