MFI rears its ugly head..UPDATE

Well 3 samples later, we are in the same boat. SAs are showing 0% motility. The people at the lab & doctors seem "baffled." So odd that motile sperm was found in the first SA back in April, again in biopsy, again in June & now nothing, of course, just in time for my ER next week. Uro is back involved & on call for sperm aspiration on ER day which it sounds like we'll need! Just need some kind of reassurance at this point uro will find motile sperm that day. He says he thinks he will but I am not too confidant in that since DH has no diagnosis! Left uro a message & see RE Tom morning. Guess this is just a vent really..as if ER isn't stressful enough, they'd better find sperm to fertilize with!! Ugh. Thanks for reading if you made it all the way through...

I am so sorry you are having these problems. The uro aspirating on the day of sounds like a good plan. Perhaps your DH should go to acupuncture this week if nothing else then just to relax a bit. GL

Does your RE/uro suggest using DS as a back-up plan? I know my clinic will buy back any vials that you buy and then don't use.

I know exactly how frustrating this can be. Our situation may be a little different, since DH has retrograde ejaculation and sperm had to be spun out of urine sample, but hoping our story can give some reassurance just the same.

DH didn't even start producing sperm until January 2012. This was due to chemo therapy in 2009. All samples (3 done from Jan - March) showed that sperm were nonmotile. They also couldn't get many in a count, so we chose to do a biopsy the day of ER. We also had DS as a backup so that the entire IVF wouldn't be ruined if biopsy was a bust. We were told that even though we were doing ICSI, they wouldn't use nonmotile sperm. Fortunately, the biopsy was a success. Not only did they have enough sperm to fertilize all eggs, but they had several vials to freeze too.

Hopefully you'll not only get some answers from Uro and RE, but you'll find motile sperm day of ER. I'll be keeping my fx for you and YH.

Thanks for the suggestion. We ruled that option out with uro a while ago. While we understand & respect that as an option, it's just not for us, especially since all tests have shown DH is capable of producing motile sperm. What we have talked about is freezing my eggs should no sperm be found that day and guess we'll just have to wait & hope that DH will produce a sample with some motility again in the future.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like you and I are close to being in the same boat. My DH usually has a few sperm but sometimes nothing and the ones that he does have are barely moving. Our RE feels this (sperm quality) is the cause of our two failed IVF's We are hoping for there to be good sperm at next month's biopsy and hopefully we can freeze it. On the plus side our MFI uro's office is straight across the hall from our RE.

Never in my life did I think I'd be praying for good sperm.

My DH is actually considering acupuncture and is taking supplements. We don't expect a cure but it's all we can do. Update us on how it all goes. Good luck to you!!!!!

Aww, thanks hun! I spent the last 3 yrs lurking/posting on this board and I'm glad to "hopefully" be one of those stories that brings encouragement to others. I know it's what kept me going the whole time.

Thanks!! Yep, sounds similar. DH's last sample (the good one in June) had good motility & higher numbers. I am so peeved we didn't freeze that sample. Docs thought for sure they'd get another good one to freeze...so far, wrong!!

Sorry to hear of your failed IVF cycles. Hope your approaching procedures do the trick!
