December 2010 Moms

question from dec 2011 mom

did your child's growth slow down significantly after one year? i joined a music class & my 7 month old (almost 20 lbs) is as big as some of the 1-2 year olds!

Re: question from dec 2011 mom

  • Yep once they start walking and then running they definitely start leaning out. Also toddler pickiness begins hitting after they turn 1 as well. At 1 year my Ds was wearing 12-18 month clothing and now he wears mostly 18-2t shirts and 2t shorts (cloth diaper) but he looks normal he is just on the higher part of the growth curve. He hasn't gained weight by leaps and bounds since his birthday.

Yep!  My DS is still wearing some of the shorts he wore last summer and some tees he wore from last fall.  He's still only about 23.5lbs but definitely gained in height.  We were in size 3 and size 4 diapers forever.

  • Yes, they sure do. Their proportions change some as well, as they get taller and thinner.

My 19 month old DS can still wear the 6 to 9 month sized shorts he was in last summer, but his legs are a lot longer than they were a year ago.

  • Yup, here too. DS has been hanging out around 24lbs for the last 6m. He's gotten taller but that is about it. Like pp said we've been in the same size diaper forever.

  • We are really tall here with an equally big head. So we have been in 2t since last summer and starting 3t now. We though have been in size 4 diapers for months and months.

  • Yes, DS's weight gain slowed tremendously once he became mobile. He started walking at 10.5 months & is like the energizer bunny. And like PP said, they become picky eaters - well, mine did at least!

He started above the 50% percentile, fell off the curve, and is now finally back on at 25%.

He had doubled his birth weight by like 4 months old, but didn't even triple it by 1 yr old.

Of course, I need to add the disclaimer that every child is different & this may not be the case for everyone.

  • Yep, J was 18lb at 9m, 21lb at 12m, and now 24lb at 19m.  But it changed from baby chubby to more lean muscle (especially his legs - any rolls are long gone)

  • Yup. Kids typically grow up, then out, then up, then out, etc. And once they start really moving, they generally get leaner throughout. If I look at pictures of C at 12 months, 15 months, and 18 months its like looking at totally different kids. Baby fat all the way to that thin big kid looking face. :-)

  • DD weighs 20.5 lbs and she was wearing a size 6-12 month outfit yesterday-which may have to go, not because she's outgrown the waist, but because the shirt is turning into a midriff on her and I don't want a skanky baby. LOL.  She's gained about 3 lbs since turning 1, so that averages to .33 lb a month versus the .66 lb a month she was gaining her 1st year.

  • Like everyone already said, yes they do! You made me pull out my baby book, and my LO was about 20 lbs at 7 mos as well.

He is now 20 mos and ~29 lbs. They really lean out once they start moving, that's for sure, but he's still bigger than most of the kids his age (80th percentile) in height & weight. All kids are different, but if he continues to grow on the same curve, you might just have one of the "bigger" kids. :-)

  • We were told at our 18 month visit that DD's growth should slow.. but it really hasn't hit that point yet.
