Babies: 3 - 6 Months

feeding schedule for big babies

My DS is approaching 22lbs at five months.  (99th percentile) At our last checkup the pedi said not to go over 40 oz in a day of formula and give all the solids he wants.  The boy can eat.  Within the past day or so, he has been wanting to eat and eat and eat.  So, I'm worried about overfeeding him.

Is anyone else in this predicament?  What do you do if you reach the set 40 oz limit and the baby is still crying for formula?

Re: feeding schedule for big babies

  • Has he been consistently eating large amount or is this new? If it's part of a growth spurt, I'd feed him what he wants to get through it but try to start pulling back on the formula and upping the solids after that. That may help satisfy him better once he starts digesting better. Does he like the solids?

  • He may not be crying for food. My daughter bawls everytime she sees her bottle and as soon as it's done she starts crying again.  If I put the bottle out of her sight and give her a toy or just hold her for a few mns, she calms down.   You would swear that she had been starving. However, she just really enjoy her food and doesn't want the good feeling to end.  She is almost 7 mths and getting 32 oz of formula and solids once a day.  Despite her crying for what seems like more food, I know she is not hungry.  When I feed her solids she only cries when it's food she really enjoys and can walk away from the rest, lol.  She is in the 95th percentile for her weight and above the chart for her height.

When you try solids, just hold the spoon in front of his mouth.  If he opens his mouth, he is hungry.  If he turns away, plays with other toys etc, then he may not be that hungry.  Good luck!
