Talk to me about milk allergy

I think DS has a milk allergy.  He has had green mucousy stool for a couple weeks now.  He had a pretty nasty cold so the Dr thought it was just from that, but now that the cold is long gone the green poo is persistant I think it could be something else.  The Dr said she's not incredibly worried about it if he doesnt seem to be in pain and that it can wait until his next well visit on Friday the 12th.  She said to start eliminating dairy now and we'll see if that helps by the time his appointment comes around in a couple weeks.

Any advice... sharing of your experiences is much appreciated!

Re: Talk to me about milk allergy

  • milk intolerance for us equaled a ton of body pain and crying. Blood was in the stools, but we could not see it.

Your baby is in no pain? That is a great sign!

  • Read the labels on EVEYTHING!  I was amazed at the amount of foods that I thought were "safe" which still had whey or casinate in them - frozen french fries, ramen noodles, rice-a-roni, bread, and on and on.

If you're going to elimiate dairy, go full force at it for at least 3 weeks, and expect to run across some oops items in those first few days.  Chili's, Macaroni Grill, On The Border, and Firehouse Subs have "allergen" menu's online.  If you eat at taco bell, make sure to go fresco style and avoid the rice.  Eating out is quite an ordeal.  You can use soy milk (or almond or rice milk) as an alternative as well as I think its Fleischmans light that is vegan (look for the U- parve on the labels, this usually signifies dairy free).  My pedi said butter is okay, but I am going to wait until we know Ruby is Mgood and has no other allergies before we try butter, especially since there is a substitute. Remember its the milk protein, not the lactose that would be causing the issue.

www.godairyfree.org is a good site to visit for information.

And good luck, it can be trying at first but when you see your DC feeling better, its worth it!

I am adding dairy free recipes in my blog if you are interested and feel free to page me if you have more questions.  I'm only a month in, but so far so good.

  • DS has a milk allergy.  It started off with him being very congested and wheezy and it did not go away. (we had thought it was a cold but it turned out not to be) In conjunction he had mucousy stools and bad reflux.  I eliminated a lot of dairy from my diet but things didn't get completely better until I weaned him completely onto soy formula.  He is like a brand new baby now.  I also suspected it was a milk allergy because DH had the same thing when he was a baby.
