Natural Birth

What to pack to wear for tub?

I'm giving birth in a hospital and although I'm not having a water birth, there is a tub available to labor in which I plan on using. What do you think I should plan on packing for wearing in the tub? I was thinking perhaps sports bra but underwear? Maybe swim bottoms? What do you ladies recommend? Thanks!

Re: What to pack to wear for tub?

  • While I was in labor, I lost all modesty and labored naked in the tub. I did lay a towel over myself though so perhaps not all modesty was lost.

If I labor in the tub this time (which I'm sure I will, it was amazing!) I'll probably just go nude again or in a nursing/sleep bra I plan on bringing. Nothing on bottom though.

  • I labored in a tub at the hospital. I was just naked. By that time, I just didn't care.

  • I brought a tankini top, nothing for the bottom (it's just easier for when they are checking you, plus you can't really see much anyway, your stomach hides it all!).

But I can't speak from experience if the tankini was the right move, because at that point I just didn't care and was as naked as a jay bird :)

  • I just wore a sports bra. I didn't have anything on bottom because you couldn't really see my bottom. And, I didn't really care. I really thought I would, but I just dropped my skirt (I was laboring in a jersey fold over waist knee length skirt from Old Navy with just my sports bra on top) and walked to the tub when my doc said I could get in.

I kept something on top for photo purposes. I was planning to deliver in the tub, and wanted LOs first photos to not be full of boobs.

I'm so glad you asked this question!  I was wondering the same thing.  Every birthing video I see has the mom completely naked so I wasn't sure if I was the only one who wanted to cover up....but who knows i think it's common to just not care at that point =)
  • If it was me, I was still a bit modest when laboring, so even a cheap clearance bikini will do :)
  • I planned on wearing a sports bra, but that went out the window. I felt too constricted and ended up just being naked.

  • I ended up just wearing a sports bra when I was laboring in the tub. I reached a point in both my labors where I just didn't want go wear pants anymore, but I still wanted my boons covered up. Maybe pack a few options, just in case.

  • Granted I was at home, but I labored naked for a bit in the shower and on the toilet (not knowing how close I was to delivery) but put on a special colored sports bra to deliver in the tub so my pictures would be more modest. I'm happy with my decision.
  • I've had 2 water births now and both times labored and delivered totally naked, for 3 reasons: 1) I couldn't have cared who saw my boobs at that point (like PPs said, you can't really see the bottom anyway, not that I would have cared), 2) I dont like the feeling of wet fabric on my skin, and I sure wasn't going to be changing into a bathing suit at that point, and 3) it seemed to make the most sense b/c I wanted immediate skin to skin on my chest, and didnt want to worry about taking something off my bottom for internals/delivery.

  • When I wasn't naked in the tub I was wearing a sports bra and nothing on bottom.

I think you won't really care what you're wearing in the tub, but if you feel you might be on the modest side you could pack some swimsuit bottoms or even a flowy short skirt.

  • I wore nothing. DH swiped a pair of scrubs to be able to help me out while I was in there.

  • I also appreciate hearing what others brought.
  • I did buy a really cheap bikini top on sale that I did not care if it got dirty or thrown out afterwards. I never wore it.

I went naked and used a hand towel to cover my chest, mostly to stay warm.

  • I too will have a labor tub.  It's nice to hear what everyone else did, which is kind of exactly what I expected.

I've plan on packing a sports bra and thin tank, but I kind of expect to get naked

  • I labored in the tub for awhile with DS--I wore a maternity/nursing tankini top. We are planning a water birth this time and I am bringing a bag of tank tops because I didn't like wearing the one wet top out of the tub or then putting it back on again moist.
  • I packed a sports bra and bathing suit bottoms. They never got used. I got in naked. Basically, after the first night (I had 3 days of labor due to induction just not taking until the pitocin started), all sense of modesty was out the window, at least while I was in my room.

  • I labored naked in the tub as well. I was in a zone and needed to be comfortable.

  • I was too far along to use the tub when I got there. And I stripped my clothes entirely off as I walked into the room. I generally consider my self much more modest. It turned out to be nice for immediate skin to skin and nursing.

  • My Lamaze instructor (who is also a labor and delivery nurse) suggested to wear a sports bra and panties. She said that we could also be naked, but if DH wanted to be in the Jacuzzi with me, he had to have swim trunks (pretty obvious, but they've probably had some guys who thought it was acceptable to be nude as well, which it's not in a hospital setting...).
