Yeah... I posted on there that we were considering Elliot for our little girl and they ripped me a new one! Good to have honest opinions, but don't be so offended. I'm not suggesting that I want to name YOUR child. Good for a laugh, at least!
I think maybe people just aren't as likely to ask for opinions on Jack or John or something than on something more unusual.
I actually found the board helpful when we named my son. I got a lot of honest feedback and food for thought, found that some people really hated and some people really loved our name. It helped me pick it, in the end. And I'm glad not everyone love love loved it. It makes a name more desirable for me when some people don't like it.
The wacky spelling of some of the names I have seen makes me shake my head. This might be the teacher in me - I shudder when I think about the poor teacher that has to say that name at the beginning of the school year.

Elliot was on my short list for a girl! Isn't that the name of the pretty girl on Scrubs? I think Elliot can be the name of a prominent CEO in heels and dress suits and Ellie can be her name as a kid.

Oh gosh, I wish I could remember some of the weird ones I was thinking of yesterday. And to be fair, it's not the names themselves, it's often the strange feedback or suggestions.
Clotilde for a girl was one (although in french it is actually very common for a man - although I haven't heard it on a child in a LONG time).
Cable.
Just really different names. Sometimes they sound made up.

Crazy people.
That's what I'm sayin!!
They HATE unisex or boy's names for girls. They get very wadded up over it. My DD has a unisex name, I quiver in fear that they will find out.
Re: Sometimes I read the "baby names" board...
