Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sippy question

My DD is 9 months, and she still doesn't quite get the sippy.  I have tried the Nuby, take 'n' toss, straw types and I don't know!  She just wants to chew it when she holds it herself.  She will drink when I hold it for her, and I have seen her hold and tip maybe a handful of times.  Any tips?

Re: Sippy question

  • We could only get the straw cups to work that had to no spill feature inside the cup rather than on the straw (hopefully that makes sense) because he didn't get tipping or having to push on the straw to open it up. Even then, it took weeks of just letting him practice with it for him to get it and now we don't use bottles at all. I'd say just keep letting her have it at meals and snacks and she should get it eventually. It just takes time and she's only 9 months.

  • We give it to dd during the day and she holds it, plays with it , chews it and eventually will drink from it. Just continue giving it to her and she will get the hang of it. It took DD a few weeks to really drink from it.
  • I have also tried a lot of different types with my twins, they both like the straw one with water, but most of it they let run down their fronts so they get all wet. They also love chewing on the Nuby one. So finally I went "cold turkey" by putting their milk in only a sippy, it's the soft spout Born Free one. DS took a hard spout for a day then protested, I think with 3 more teeth breaking through it was too painful. It took a few days but now they take their three daily milks by sippy just fine and still get their bedtime bottle.
