TTC After a Loss

Need Your Honest Opinion! (NTTCR, work related)

Hello girls I'm sort of in an employment pickle! So here's the back story. I have been with the same company since I started college. After graduation, I was promoted and have been working in that position for 2 years now. Well to say the least--it is time to move on. Not only have I exhausted my growth potential within the company (its a small company), I am just unhappy here. Many of the people I work with are just genuinely not good people.

So I have been job searching for what feels like FOREVER & finally just got a job offer for a very large cosmetic company (cough cough estee lauder). So heres the issue, I would be taking a pay cut. A $2.50 an hour pay cut. I would have to get a part time job on the side (probably bartending or waitressing to make up the difference).

I know that I am going to have to weigh out the pro's (closer to home, opportunity for career advancement, fun perks)  and con's and all that jazz but has anyone been in this situation before and how did it turn out for you?

I haven't been in that situation, but I think about it all the time.  I have legitimately put off looking for something new until we are no longer TTC, whether it's because we are fortunate enough to get PG again, or if we decide that we're going to go another route.  I found a job I was interested in last fall and really, really wanted to apply but didn't want to chance getting a new job, starting and then getting a BFP.  I have the time saved with my current company to have flexibility off for appointments, saved vacation & PTO for a paid leave, and the FMLA benefit.

So with that said, I think that should be the first thing you consider.  If that doesn't matter to you, then consider whether having to get a part time job is going to work with the potential of a pregnancy and then a baby.  I think one job is hard enough to juggle, but then another would make it even trickier.

If you're really unhappy where you are, then maybe you just go for it and make it work.  Sometimes the money just isn't as important as your sanity and happiness.

This really didn't give you answers, but I wanted to throw my two cents in there because it's something so relevant to me too... and I'm very aware that when I start looking, I'm probably facing a pay cut too.  At any rate, good luck with your decision!

Thanks. You're absolutely right. I'm leaning more towards just sticking it out here. My job is very secure with great benefits as well. Looking for a job while TTC is so tricky and that is my number one priority.

  • I was actually in this position not too long ago. I worked as a daycare teacher while finishing my masters in education. I was looking for a job as a teacher that paid more because I was not getting much at the daycare. A teacher assistant position opened up and I was offered the job but it was $1.50 pay cut. I decided to take it because there was room for me to grow there- if a teacher job opened up they would interview and possibly hire me. I made my decision thinking this- I cannot get paid anymore than I am at the daycare and there are no teaching positions open so I am going to take the position in hopes that a teacher position opens up. And sure enough...six months later a teaching position opened, I interview and got the job! Now I am getting paid double what I was as a TA or a daycare teacher!

So my suggestion to you is to weigh the pros and cons and to also consider how this job will help you move up. If you have room for a raise or better position with this new job I would take it. HTH! GL to you!
