NBR - Odd Dog Habits

I will not be giving birth to a puppy this September, but it seems like a lot of people here have dogs so totally technically board related!

My yorkie/something/possibly a poodle mix likes to lick the bedsheets where my husband sleeps. Is this super weird? Surely someone else's dog does this sort of thing, right?

What are your dogs weirdest habits?

Re: NBR - Odd Dog Habits

  • Our Golden is a pretty standard issue dog, but the Sheltie we had before him was a total nut.  He couldn't handle certain sounds - nail clipper, food chopper, blender, any clicking noises he couldn't identify, certain phone ringtones .... on and on.  He'd yap and run in circles and not settle down for EVER.

I loved that dog to pieces (he died last fall) but I don't know that you could pay me to have another Sheltie!  They're a pretty quirky breed.

The part about the unidentifiable clicking noises is hilarious. I've never had a sheltie but have heard about their personalities.

  • My chihuahua daschund(sp?) mix does that in the couch. Drove DH so crazy that he finally banned her from the couch all together.  She is 12 years old, and only seems to follow that rule when no one is looking. Lol

When we let our pup out in the backyard to do his stuff, he never walks in the middle of the yard. He always walks around the perimeter... Even if it means having to take the longest possible way to get back in the house. It's so bizarre... I have no idea what his issue is with the middle of the yard!

My dog lays on MH's pillow case and licks it.  She's a total weirdo.

She will also only drink water out of a dixie cup.  Yeah...

Kevin (see below photoBig Smile) will lick MHs pillow till he makes himself sick! It drives me crazy but mostly grosses me out. He also army crawls all over the house when he get excited.

My lab is completely neurotic. He does things like this all the time. He will only get in my car on a certain side, he enters the house a certain way, he does the yard thing like your dog. And it seems like he develops a new quirk every few months or so. His new thing is being petrified of hardwood floors, which is horrible because the condo we are now renting until next month has hardwood exclusively in the first level.

Our lab also licks everything, usually when he is bored, but he will lick the comforter, the couch, etc. When he was a puppy he would sit on the stairs and lick the walls or lay in the family room and lick the carpet.

  • My dog just licks where ever she is as she is falling asleep. So she will lick the sheets or the couch or her bed. She loves licking toes as well. She does circles on the carpet on her side by pawing and pulling her self. She also paws at your ha if she wants you to pet he and she will hold your hand with her paw to keep you petting her belly. She will only eat her food over a carpet. She is a nut an I love her to death.

My golden hoards socks. She steals them from wherever she can find them, dirty laundry, clean, folded laundry, I've even caught her with her head in the open dryer. She doesn't chew them. In fact, she holds them super gently in her mouth. She will grab as many as she possibly can in one mouthful. I think her standing record is 9 socks. And then, she carries them into our bedroom and lays them across her bed.

What is more odd, is that she seems embarrassed by her need for socks. It's really like a compulsion for her. She'll wake up from a sound sleep, disappear for 30 seconds, and reappear with a sock, hanging her head in shame.

    She certainly has personality.

Mine does this too!  She walks the perimeter only.  So weird.

I think that's cute! It sounds like they are trying to avoid doing their business where people might walk the most.

My yellow lab has to go out on the right and come in on the left, she eats by taking a mouth full, walks in a circle while eating and dropping food, picks up the pieces she drops, on the way back to the bowl and repeats, she comes running to check on you if you sneeze more then 2x in a row, she will only eat if you have just taken her out, she has to have her teeth brush every night ( yes with human toothpaste and a real toothbrush), she looks away when you try to clip her nails like you are killing her, she hates the rain but loves the lake and bath tub, she hates when her blankets get too dirty, she wont lay on them...

i could go on and on but i wont bore you all

I wish I could convince my dogs to want to have their teeth cleaned every day!

Here's something else odd about my pups:

They really, really love lettuce. Like to the point that if I am at the table eating a cheeseburger or something and my husband goes into the kitchen to make a salad, they will follow him and beg for lettuce. (Of course this may have to do with the fact that they know they will not be getting any of my food!)

My dog will not walk past the vacuum unless it is greater than 10ish feet away, no vacuum of any kind, shop vac, steam mop, swiffer, etc. She also hates the lawnmower. She probably thinks it's related to the vacuum.

She also will not walk through doors that are less than half open.

After she poops, she sprints around the yard in circles for 5 minutes, that's how we know she went.

AND, every night around 10pm, she takes her bed and shakes it ferociously for a good 10 minutes, and then lays down on it and passes out.

Those are just a few of her most typical behaviors. She's weird.

That one had me laughing out loud.

My dogs will sit at the edge of a room when I am vacuuming. They do that thing where they try to get closer and closer but then they're too close and they run away in fear. And then they come back, slowly, cautiously. And run away again. Repeat until my house is clean.

  • My beagle/corgi mix has an ethnicity issue as well and white trash...don't ask me how he knows they are trash, but he does. He also thinks everything is his, especially socks, underwear, remotes, and toilet paper. I can always tell when he has one of these items because he bolts under my bed with them to chew them up because he knows I can't reach him.

Yeah people say he is bad, I just say he is hyper and special lol

*sigh* my dog is generally friendly, but there is a certain ethnicity of people that he ALWAYS barks or growls a bit at. I have no idea why. And we live in a very ethnically diverse area so it's not like he's not used to people of various shapes, colors, and sizes.

    Yes...I have a racist dog.

He also used to hoard my socks and underwear behind the couch. I have apparently broken him of that habit, but teaching him tolerance is not going well!

This I can actually explain!  lol... our dog does it too.   Dogs see in black and white.   With lighter skinned people, they can distinguish facial features as they can see where the shadows fall.   With darker skinned people, they look like a dark feature-less mass to the dogs, so they are unable to distinguish who/what they are.    My dog is the sweetest dog...but barks at black people all the time.  If he knows you, once you speak, he'll settle down, but until then...he's barking.  Same thing happens if a person of any color has the light behind them and the dog is in a dark room.    Luckily, our friends know that we didn't train him to be that way.  But it is super embarrassing.    Also...my dog is black.  smh....

The are obsessed with peeing over the other's pee. This morning, I watched Puckett pee in the yard like normal (what I thought would be enough to completely empty his bladder.)  Levi walked over and peed on it. Then Puck ran back over and peed on it again, then Levi did it again.  They're crazy.

Fun fact, dogs have the ability to reserve a small amount of urine so they always have some available for marking.

Fun Fact:  I also have this ability these days.  Stick out tongue Except, I don't go around marking things.  Ew. lol

yup i read that too, the funny thing is, that isn't the ethnicity he is barking at haha. He quiets when i tell him to, but it is still super embarrassing. Especially since my dog is a west highland WHITE terrier.

HAHAHA!!!!  Did you ever see that episode of the Chappelle show where he's blind and doesn't know that he's black, and he hates black people?   That's what I think of every time my dog does his racist bit.

Everytime I enter the kitchen, the doberman will do a complete circle before coming towards me.  That's just HER thing.

My pitbull (older) will do a trick when I ask the dobie to do it.  Like she is her teacher or something.  Strangest thing when you ask one to roll over and the other one does it.

Our deceased Rottweiler would howl at sirens.  He would always hear them before we would.  Didn't howl about anything else though.  DH said when he was little they had a house fire and maybe that was the cause.

  • My dogs are weird sometimes, too.  My boxer mix will nibble on things - beds, blankets, pillows, socks.  It's like her nervous habit.  She never tears anything up or bites people or anything, but if you let her go too long you end up with billy goat-type holes in blankets.  When she gets nervous I have to tell her "don't eat the bed."

My golden mix can't or won't lift his leg to pee, so he just kind of leans forward and spreads his front paws so as to not pee on his feet.  He also likes to lay with the frog legs out, although I don't think it's that weird.  He also whines at the cat every time he sees her.  Every. Single. Time.  I have to remind him that he's lived here for almost 3 years.  I know she's pretty, but it's never going to happen, bud.

Also, not dogs, but my cat HATES when people sneeze.  She will meow every time, no matter where she is in the house.  Once I sneezed and she meowed, and I looked over and she was still sleeping.  She meowed in her sleep.

  • omg these have me dying laughing! I love furbabies!

Chloe (mini-shephard) has a tendency to "dance" everytime she poops.  she looks like a cat trying to bury her poop in a litter box, except she does it all over the yard.

Brady (dauschound) is obsessed with licking my DH.  any body part. doesn't matter.  he licks his pillow when he first wakes up.  will sit and lick DH's feet for HOURS.  sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to pee and brady is licking DH's feet in his sleep!! he also likes to lay with his head covering DH's mouth.  he climbs on his chest and literally puts his face on top of DH's mouth.

  • My dog (jack russell mixed with something) is just weird. She won't walk on the yellow bumpy parts of street corners (is there a word for those?). She also hates UPS. This doesn't seem so weird except she 1) can tell the difference between FedEx/other delivery trucks and UPS and 2) she recognizes the trucks so when we're walking and one drives by she stops and snarls at it.

She also is afraid of belts. And when she gets really happy her little snuggle tooth sticks out the side of her mouth.

  • Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel finds lotion delicious. If I put on lotion of any kind he cannot resist me. He will follow me around and lick my feet and legs, and if I sit down he'll jump up next to me to lick my arms and any other moisturized part. Thanks to him I now use only very natural skin care. I will admit that when he licks my feet it's relaxing. A sign that DH needs to give me more footrubs I suppose.

Also, an endearing trait was that he always slept under DD's crib. He's always been so loving and gentle with her and now that she doesn't sleep in a crib, he still usually sleeps in her room. Sometimes, when I peek in at DD I find them spooning in her bed. Him snoring away. So stinking adorable. Kids and the dogs that love them. Doesn't get any sweeter.

  • One of my dogs loves to lick DH's head after he showers. She styles his hair for him! (all 1/2 inch of it). She also likes to lick the water droplets off his legs as he gets out of the shower. But she won't go near the shower while it's running - I think the noise scares her. The other dog however will climb right in the shower if you let him.

They are just goofballs in general :)

  • OMG these are so cute!

My dog also loves lettuce! Also... bananas, berries, coffee beans, and pretty much any vegetables and fruits.

He does the yard perimeter walk thing, too, or he did in our old yard. During our first winter at that house, he had pooed a lot in one area. That spring, it was like he could still smell the poo and ever since then he refused to walk in what we dubbed "the poo zone."

He is a total sneakster when it comes to food. I ban him from the kitchen when I'm cooking, but he always tries to sneak in. I even caught him faking a drink from his water dish at the entrance to the kitchen--he was actually licking the side of the bowl and watching to see if I dropped anything. He's really obsessed with food.

And finally, he's a bit of a lone wolf at the park, but he has a total thing for Weimaraners. He fell in love once with a beautiful Weimaraner who was apparently very standoffish, but he managed to woo her anyway. He's a handsome little devil. :)

MINE TOO! Ever since we moved to our new house he only will walk on the wood chips/mulch, like right next to the house... So glad we have an acre and invisible fence... he totally doesn't even try to leave the woodchips.

  • My Pitbull/Boxer, Tifa, likes to lick daddy's pants when he comes home from work (works in the food service/hospitality industry) and sleeps on the back of the couch (all 70+ lbs of her. I wish I knew how to embed a pic in a post so you guys could see that. It's hilarious. My Pitbull/Doberman, Cammy, well, she's just weird, but the funniest thing she does is she plays with her treats. When you give her a cookie, she'll run off with it, drop it, run in circles around it, bark at it, nip at it, yeah all this craziness, and then finally eat it.

  • we are owned by a 3 year old black pug and he has nicknames for the odd things he does.

He sucks on blankets to the point of leaving holes>  Vampire Puppy,

Runs in circles like most pugs do when excited> Nascar Puppy,

He brushes his morning breath tounge with DH hair> Groomer Puppy,

Hides stuff just out of reach under bed, right now he has a vacuum attachment> Hoarder Puppy,

He also licks DH as he gets out of shower> Carwash Puppy.

oh and he will only lay on my legs when I have a blanket over them, also only walks perimiter of yard in morning because he doesn't like wet grass.

  • My golden retriever who passed away a few years back was obsessed with toys.  The plastic ones he would chew into little pieces and then keep the pieces around forever!!!  I think he was trying to make one toy into ten little toys or something.  Then he would always have a toy at my mom's house he would hide and when he came back for a visit, the first thing he would do was go find the toy and bring it to you to play.  (She had 3 big dogs and 1 little dog herself so I think he was hiding it from them and they never messed with his toy, they always left it for him).

My yellow lab also likes lotion and licks my legs everytime I get out of the shower.  She's scared of the cat to the point she will no longer use the dog door because she doesn't know if the cat is on the other side or not.  If the cat is any where near the door when it's time to go in or out, I have to walk in or out with her and "shield" her from the cat and then she runs through just as fast as she can.  She's deathly afraid of the fly swatter.  She will only eat her food in the middle of the night after everyone has gone to bed. And she likes to drink water out of the hose.  When I go out to water the ducks and cows I always have to stop and let her take a drink - it's really cute to watch.

  • My mutt, Kona, is obsessed with shower water. We have a glass shower door, and whenever one of us is in the shower he runs in and starts sticking his tongue under the door to catch the water running down it. I thought I must have been forgetting to fill his water bowl, but nope. Bowl full of fresh water or not, he wants the shower water.

My big girl, Tifa, does something similar to this and I never understood it. She could have literally just drank out of a freshly filled bowl of clean water, but the second the bathtub faucet gets turned on, she has to drink from there.
