C-sections

tenderness below belly button, above outer incision

I had a c-section almost 3 weeks ago. I have some tenderness when I touch about an inch below my belly button and a few inches above my scar. Is that the inner incision that is tender to touch? If so, is it normal to still feel tender at 2 and half weeks? My outer incision doesn't hurt at all.

Re: tenderness below belly button, above outer incision

  • I had this for a good six weeks or so after my csection. I believe it is the inner incision that is sensative to touch. I would say its normal. I am five months out and sometimes get tender but I am almost normal again.

Thanks for responding. Hopefully it is normal sensitivity and will eventually heal. I'm just hoping it's not some sort of complication and is all just part of the healing process. Thanks again.

  • I feel the exact same way.  I remember with my first that this took a few weeks to get better.

  • Is it warm to the touch?  Is it red/swollen?  If so, check with your doctor.  It might be an infection.  I told the nurse when she was taking off the staples and totally ignored me and said it was nothing.  A few days later fluid started coming out of two holes.

No, it's not warm or red or swollen. It's just a little tender or sensitive when I run my fingers along about an inch below my belly button. The tenderness is not near my outer incision, it's about 2 or so inches above it, that's why I'm thinking it must be where my inner incision is.

  • I actually asked my dr about this at my 3 week appt. He said it was completely normal and explained how I was cut. There are actually 3 incisions (at least with mine). 2 horizontal and 1 vertical. The vertical one is the one that is tender still because its the muscle incision and it's trying to heal while we're using the muscle. I'm now at 4 weeks pp and still have the tenderness. HTH

Thanks, good to know. Just curious, when you say muscle incision do you mean the uterus or abdominal muscles? Thanks!

  • The vertical incision is in the abdominal muscle. Well, actually in the muscle that connects the abdominal muscles. The second horizontal is in the uterus.

  • I'm glad I just came across this. I just posted the same question a minute ago. Mines in the exact same spot but I describe it as warm/burning sensation it made me nervous bc of this but everything else looks and seems great.

Hmmm, mine isn't warm/burning. It's more tender/sensitive, especially when I run my fingers across it. I talked with a nurse today and she said that it's my inner incision healing and it's pretty normal. She told me just to take it easy and not to overdo anything or lift anything over 35 pounds. I'm almost 20 days pp. I would just make sure you don't get a high temp/fever. Good luck.

Yes mines the same. When running my fingers across it feels very sensitive and tender and almost numb. But if I had to describe the feeling when not touching, it's kinda burning. My mom reminded me that they go through nerve endings as well which is the numb part. I'm glad to hear that it's seemingly normal. Good luck to you also and feel better!
