I have a Volvo V50 wagon, which I love. It's the perfect size for me, I like the way it drives, it just kind of "fits" me. Unfortunately, it's been a complete lemon and because Volvos are pricey to fix, I've decided never to own another one.
I'm not ruling out a small SUV or crossover for my next vehicle, but I really love wagons. Does anyone have one that they love?
Re: Recommend your station wagon or hatchback
I'm an SUV girl....GL 450 here that I really like. The station wagons are goofy IMO though.
I love the smaller lexus SUV's, the Honda pilots are cute as well as the, new Jeep Cherokees. I love all of them.
We have a Honda Fit that I *love*, but it's much smaller than a wagon.
If I could get any wagon it would be the Jetta. They are awesome. But I think VW"s are also expensive to repair.
It is not my current car, but it will be my next car: Suburu Outback.
I drove a 2011 model as a rental for 3 weeks, and it was fantastic. They are pretty reasonably-priced, get great gas mileage, and have a long lifespan (this was according to me mechanic).
My friends have a Subaru Outback and looovvvveee it. I have not driven in it but I rode in it and it is really nice and smooth. We looked at the Acura TSX and I might consider it when I buy my next vehicle.
I just saw one of these for the first time the other day and it really caught my eye, too! VERY cute!
I have heard VW's are expensive to repair. But I wouldn't mind that so much if they don't need repairs often. That's the problem with my Volvo, there is always something wrong with it.
So true! I drove a VW Bettle and that thing cost a lot of money after the warranty ran out... Sad times. I may have had a lemon though. I did love my car, but it needed some help. I miss you CarCar.
I love VWs, but every friend/ family member that has had one complains about the cost of getting them fixed.
I'm strongly considering a Highlander if I go with an SUV.
My last hatchback was a Scion xa that I had for 7 years. Awesome dependable car, nearly 40 mpg, but the backseat was a tight fit for carseats.
I have a Volkswagon Passat station wagon that we really like, and they are great cars. I know that VWs are a little pricey to fix, but mine is over 10 years old and we haven't had very many problems with it. Plus DH is handy with cars, so he does nearly all of our repairs. Which doesn't help you, but I would say they are good quality so overall we haven't had to fix a lot.
We are in the market for a minivan though, so the wagon will be gone soon!
Love our 2011 Subaru Outback, it's just the best.

I LOVE THIS SIGGY!!!!!!
I absolutely adore my Toyota Matrix. We bought it used in 2007 (it's a 2007 model and was used as a loaner) and has never given us a single problem.
It is deceptively huge--- it's small to maneuver but holds a ton. One time we fit a bathtub in there, and another time, 2 exterior doors including the frames.
I know you've got dogs; a major selling point for us was that it's plastic in the back instead of upholstered, so it's easy to wipe clean. My mom and I take our big dogs for walks all the time and they both fit comfortably in the back.
Can you tell I love my car? I could keep going if you want!
We are VW junkies in this house. We currently have a Jetta & a Passat (neither are wagons). DH used to have a Mazda 3 hatchback for work that he put a TON of miles on and had no problems with. We didn't have kids at the time, but we were sure able to cram a lot of crap in that thing.
When we bought our last car we also looked at the Subaru Outback, but it was going to be more than we could afford. Plus everyone I told that we were looking at a Subaru made a comment about them being lesbian cars. Not that it really matters though.
To the last paragraph: Ummm, okay. What a strange thing for people to say. I've been told Subarus are "granola hippy cars".,
I had a Jetta pre-kids and it was a good car but small. I traded it in for a Mazda CX7 to have a large enough back seat for adults to sit comfortably. I'm on my second Mazda CX7 and the only complaint is I'm not sure I will be able to fit 2 rf carseats in the back (DH and I are both tall). If you don't plan on having 2 rf carseats, it is a great crossover.
I'm sad to read about the Volvo. My next car will most likely be the Volvo XC90 or the Infinity JX.
My SIL has the Audi wagon and loves it. My brother also loves to drive it. It is pricey though.
I think it's weird too, but it was pretty much everyone I told I was looking at a Subaru. My boss was looking at new cars about a month ago and she came to me and asked if I had heard this because everyone she told said the same thing. Maybe it's just a Seattle thing.
I used to have a Mazda Protege5 that I loooooved. But it was murdered by a drunk driver. The Mazda 3 wagon is pretty sweet. It came out like a month after I bought the 5.
We have a Scion xB now. It's compact but really roomy inside. DH is 6'3" and fits fine in the backseat.
I drive a 2010 Honda Pilot and I love it, but I think it might be too big for what you are looking for.
I have a lot of family and friends that own the Subaru Outback and they can't say enough about how much they love it. It is reliable and all have had great luck with their maintenance departments at the dealers.
That is weird. I've never heard that before. There must be a lot of lesbians in the West/Pacific Northwest then, b/c everytime we visit there that's all we see...
We love, love, love our Toyota Matrix. It's good sized. The seats fold completely flat- there's no "dip" between the trunk and seats so it's like having a truck. We've hauled all sorts of things in there just like another poster mentioned. DH has actually fit more in his car than his bosses truck. Wild, but true.
I also like the Nissan Rogue (SUV) and the new Ford hatchback (not sure the model name) looks really roomy.
I have a Versa hatchback and it's just too small in the trunk, but is good enough for the 3 of us.
Our next car will probably be a Subaru Outback or similar wagon type. We love hatchbacks here.
Francesca Pearl is here! Josephine Hope is almost 3!
