RS newbie...what am I doing wrong? Help! Pics inside

I just got my new SBP French twill and tried DS in it. Last night was a fail but this morning we tried again. I wanted to start with the tummy hold. I feel better about today's try than last night but still think I'm doing something wrong. Are the rings in the right spot? What about his bum? This is how we started out:

Then he stretched and this is how he was after:

He did not seem secure after he did this and I noticed his bum was now higher than his legs. What am I doing wrong?! Thanks!

  • as far as I can tell the rings are in the right place.

Make sure his knees are up in the right position as you are tightening it. Try tucking the material up inbetween you and him in between his legs. Pull the bottom rail tighter. Also it looks like all of it could be pulled a bit tighter maybe.

  • Yep, just try snugging up the bottom rail, he shouldn't really be able to stretch out in the tummy carry. The bottom rail should hold his knees up and his bottom should sink down into a kind of a pouch.

  • So my bottom rail is too loose? Where should the fabric hit his legs? When I tried to reposition him and tighten it seemed like it was hurting his legs (red marks?). Thanks ladies, appreciate your feedback!

  • You might find it more supportive if you slide the fabric down your shoulder a little bit.  I prefer to wear mine more like a cap sleeve and I find it helps snug up the rails easier for me.

ETA:  i have the exact same RS, color and all :)

This is a good point too. And It looks like you have the bottom in the right place on his legs, it might help avoid marks if the fabric isn't bunched there.

  • To be honest, my daughter did not like to have her legs up and she spent a lot of time in that stretched out position. I just made sure everything was tight and she seemed happy.

I second the advice about the shoulder being like a cap sleeve (or even lower sometimes). It makes a huge difference for your long term comfort.

  • I think you need a deeper pocket for him to sit in. It shouldn't cut into his legs... Think of it like a hammock. I'd also lower the shoulder to cap sleeve style.
