Talk to me about birth control

I've never taken birth control. My H and I have always said, If it happens, it happens, and we've always been really careful. I REALLY dont want to get knocked up anytime soon, so im exploring my birth control options. Whats worked for you ladies? IUD? Pill? Ring/ Patch?

Re: Talk to me about birth control

  • I'm EBF'ing so I'm taking the mini-pill - started taking it after my 6 week PP appointment.  Before TTC, I took the Yaz pill and never had any problems with it.  The only problem with the pill is you have to be responsible in taking it.  If you have trouble remembering to incorporate it into your routine, it may not be the best option.

  • I have an IUD (Paragard).
  • I have taken so many different BCP's in the past and I really like Yaz. I'm back on it but the generic form this time, Gianvi.

  • I have paragard (no more kids for us, we think). I've only had it for a day so I can't say much about it. I couldn't do hormonal birth control so this was a great solution!

  • Hormonal birth control pills worked for me I guess in that they completely killed any desire I had to have sex. Might as well have been the abstinence only method, no matter which pill I tried, low dose or no.

Now I have the Mirena. I'm only 6 weeks in, but I already like it better than the HBC pills. I'm hoping to end up in the lucky few who don't get a period on it.

  • I use the nuvaring and love it. You don't need to remember to take it every day and there is a program you can download on he computer to remind you to put it in/take it out.

    Awesome! Thats neat.
  • Before DD I used the Nuvaring as well.  I don't trust myself to remember pills, so it was great for me for that reason.  I've never been on a different hormonal to compare it to, though.  It decreased moodiness and breakouts for me, plus periods were shorter and lighter, but after I stopped using it I realized it did decrease my mojo.  I started using it when I started seeing DH so I thought it was just new relationship vs. established relationship, lol.

I used to take BCP, it worked well, I was on it for years, but I have a clotting disorder that was discovered, so it's not an option now. I had Mirena put in after my 6 week appt and I like it. I had a little spotting for 1 day and nothing since. I EBF and haven't gotten my first PP period, and I'm sort of hoping I won't at this point. Of course, I'll probably freak out a bit not having a period, so I envision having some $ store HPTs on hand to ease my mind.

  • Since I am BFing, it is the mini pill for me. Before I was PG with DD, I was on the NuvaRing and loved it! DH and I have a funny story about it though- the first time we had sex, he stopped midway through and looked down THERE. I was thinking WTF but looked down and saw that it came out on his penis! We still joke about it to this day that we played Ring Around the Penis the first time! Haha. (it only happened one additional time, FWIW)
