Next week we are going on a camping trip. One of the main foods for lunch is obviously hot dogs or sausage. Is it okay to eat precooked, nitrate-free hot dogs/sausage cooked over a fire?
I do believe so, my doctor said that the fear with hot dogs/lunchmeat is the possibly of contracting listeria. This can be prevented though by just heating these meats up (ie. in the microwave, on the stove, over the fire) before you eat them. I would say make sure it is heated all the way through and you should be all set. Have fun camping!
I would think it would be ok, especially if they are nitrate free. I think that is the reason they say not to eat hot dogs. I didn't even know there was a such thing!

There seems to be two issues with hot dogs. The first is listeria. You should be fine cooking them while camping. You want to heat them to steaming - so if you cooking on a stick over the fire, I would make sure you get them good and hot. The second is that standard hotdogs have nitrates/nitrites in them. I think if you want ones that are nitrate/nitrite free you need to get uncurred hotdogs.
There is a Wienerschnitzel down the road from my house. I had a chili dog on Sunday. It was divine. I am now trying to forget that there is a Wienerschnitzel down the road from my house.
I got some organic, nitrate free turkey dogs at Whole Foods and had them for dinner last night - they were really good! DH liked them as well! I think they also make regular dogs too (not just turkey).
