C-sections

Was told I would need a csection at my 11 wk appt!

I was told by my midwife today that Bc of my 4th degree tear, hemoraging last time with my first & severe complications with my daughter (all of this caused Bc she was really too big for me to have but the other hospital made me) that I would need a c-section with this baby. I'm just wondering what can I expect in the delivery & recovery?? TIA!!

  • My c/s was super easy (even though I was TERRIFIED).  The spinal wasn't bad, a small pinch, I had to focus on relaxing and not tensing up and then it was NBD.  My c/s was scheduled for 7:30, my babies were born at 7:39 and 7:40 and I was starting to feel some discomfort around 10:00 am.  I definitely kept up with my pain meds.  That night around 8:00 I started walking.  DH didn't stay with me, so the nurse had to push the bassinet around the floor.  I would try to walk every hour or so while I was awake, the longer I sat still on my butt the harder/more uncomfortable it was to get going again.  By the time I got home, I had to remind myself to slow down because I was feeling so good.

  • My scheduled c/s was birthing bliss!  I was scared of the spinal and it was no big deal.  I had all feeling back in about 3 hours and was up and walking in 8 hours.  The worst part was the liquid diet for the first 24 hours which I didn't follow.  I had my friend sneak a bagel in because I was STARVING.  I also had to remind myself to slow down after getting home.

It's not bad at all.  Don't fret.

You had a liquid diet for the first 24 hours?  I didn't have any diet restrictions after my c/s.

  • I had an emergency c-section so my experience is probably a little (very) different.  There was a clear sense of urgency in getting LO out and I'm not sure if she was stuck or what but one of the doctors got up on the table and SHOVED down, quick and hard, on my belly several times.  There was no pain at all but it did surprise me and my husband.  I had never heard from anyone that this is how it worked but I guess it is not common.  He later stated that he didn't realize c-sections were so "violent."  In recovery immediately after they need to push down on your belly to help and ensure your uterus is retracting...that was unpleasant.  Like any surgery, there is discomfort and pain but the meds you receive do the trick.  You will do whatever you have to do NOT to sneeze or cough but the hospital will usually provide you with a pillow or folded blanked to press against your incision when you need to use those muscles, and that helps.

  • Delivery is not too bad. I was able to see and hold DD in my room immediately after they closed me up (although this may vary depending on your hospital I think). The biggest thing with recovery is trying to get out of bed and walk around as soon as you feel up to it. They also give you this breathing device for  you to do breathing exercises afterward because apparently you're at a higher risk for pneumonia. I don't know if all hospitals do this but mine did.
