Babies: 3 - 6 Months

No Sleep Schedule and such...

I havent been doing a sleep/eating schedule.  I havent been trying to train for one either.  Is this bad, is it something I need to do?  There is A LOT of talk about it on here, but for me, LO eats, on average, every 3-4 hours.  she sleeps through the night from about 930 or 10 till between 7 and 8.  She doesnt really like naps all that much, but will take one from time to time, or cat nap throughout the day.

  • You're DD is just like mine.  I've been thinking of getting DD on a schedule but it just seems like so much work.  and DD is a really good baby and she's happy most of the time so I don't see it as a problem.  A lot of people like to put the baby on a schedule because they can better plan their day.  I go out with DD all the time and if she gets hungry while we are out then I feed her and she will usually nap in her carseat/stroller while we are out.

  • We don't have one either.  BUT, I am really trying to find one because I have to go back to work in a month.  MIL will be helping to watch her and she is very unsure about it....very timid when trying to deal with DD...not sure how that is going to go.  Oh, and DD doesn't like naps either!!

  • I'm still fine tuning DS's schedule.  I think it's ok to not have them on an exact schedule until you notice their own patterns.

  • I think it's a personal choice- I'm not really a "go with the flow" sort of person so I like the idea of having a loose schedule. I think I've been influenced by my SIL who has 3 kids- they've never had any kind of consistency as far as naps or bedtimes and her kids are horrible sleepers. I don't want to create that issue for my son down the road.

The only thing I would be concerned about is the not napping. All of the sleep books say that babies at this age really can't be up for longer than 2 hours without becoming overtired. So it might not be that she doesn't want to nap- it might be that she gets overtired and then is too wired to fall asleep on her own. I know with my son I really have to force naps on him- he needs that sleep during the day. It's awesome that your LO sleeps 10-11 hours at night but babies need around 15 hours total at 3-4 months. Maybe she's one of those babies that can get by with less sleep but I know with my son he becomes a nightmare by the end of the day when he hasn't napped well.

  • We have no set schedule. She has certain times during the day when I know she is starting to get tired. So, she generally takes naps within the same hour each day. At night she will go to bed at 6:30 sometimes and then other nights she is up til 8. No later than that though. She still eats every 2-3 hours during the day and we do wake up twice at night for feedings. I'm a stay at home mom, though and don't mind it. I'm really not a schedule type person anyway. It works for us and we are all happy and that's all that matters.

  • Just posted about the same thing! DD sleeps just like that same times of night and everything!! I've been wondering about scheduling her naps as well.

  • My DS is the same way. I have never tried to put him on a schedule! He did it on his own! Around 3 months, his bedtime was 10pm-5am, and then a few weeks ago, he changed his bedtime to 830pm and sleeps until 5-6am.  he drinks 6oz every 3-4hrs, and usually takes good naps throw out the day.  it seems to be working for us right now, and he's a pretty happy baby.  I think you just need to do whats best for you, and your family =) You will know if your LO is not getting enough sleep, and needs longer naps, LOs are very very crabby when they are overly tired!
