reflux is my nightmare

Hi everyone, so my LO has reflux, and let me tell you, its def no fun. On top of that I've been diagnosed with having postpartum depression as well as anxiety.... its been such a rough month for us. (LO, DH and I) just wondering if anyone else is going through some PPD PPA ....?? And is anyone dealing with reflux, if so, what were the symptoms and what has your ped done to help?

I'm so sorry.  I do not have postpartum, but I remember how emotional I was the first few weeks and I feel for you.  It was horrible.  My LO has slight reflux, which has gotten better with a formula change.  The symptoms were her spitting up a lot and sometimes having milk come out of her nose.  My dr. was not overly concerned because she was gaining good weight.  Some things he told me to do are feed her sitting upright, try to make sure to get a good burp (stop in the middle if you need to), keep her elevated for at least 15 minutes after feeding, and have her sleep on an incline.  We use the rock n play.  I also switched to Dr. Brown's bottles, but can't say they've definitely helped because we also switched formula around that time.

Have you spoken with your pedi about?  What do they suggest?

  • I have had and currently have PPD with some anxiety, so I feel for you BIG time. It's so scary when you look back at it, too. I was considering taking my baby back to the hospital because I was afraid that I'd forget about her, and that they could find someone better to care for her. Every time I looked at her my heart would race and I could barely catch my breath. Even seeing other people's babies or packages of diapers made me feel this way.

You are not alone, and if you ever need to chat about it I would definitely talk with you about it! I really hope you feel some relief from this. Dealing with the reflux must be incredibly difficult, too, and wouldn't help the PPD/PPA situation.

  • I am sorry.  My DS had reflux, and it was so hard.  I had no idea until I had a baby with it how miserable it can be.  And other than DH, most of my friends and family did not understand what we were going through just trying to feed our baby and keep him from being in pain.

DS was on Zantac, then we added Prevacid, then we went to see a pediatric GI and changed to Nexium.  He was on meds until around age 2, although the first year was definitely the hardest.  If you don't feel your pedi is doing enough about your LO's reflux, see if you can go to a pediatric GI specialist.  FWIW, it does take a couple weeks on a medicine to see an improvement.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Our little man has reflux too along with what we think is a milk allergy ( he had really bad acne which cleared up immeidatly after switching to nutrimigin) I can tell its no fun. Plus mommy is his least favorite person to hold him. I couldn't hold him for almost 2 weeks because he was 10lbs and I had had an emergency C-section. I hear you about the PPD, I went an entire pregnancy without having to take my antidepressant but the week after he was born I needed it again :/. Some days all I can do is watch my husband take care of him and when hes not home sometimes I just have to step outside for a minute while he is fussing to breath.
