Trying to Get Pregnant

Waiting on the 1 year mark in Amenorrhea land

Morning Ladies:)  Haven't posted in awhile as my vengeful uterus is doing absolutely nothing.  What CD day am i at (looks down at ticker)?

After calls to numerous doctors (yes, i called...alot) everyone says the same thing that i have to wait a year to see if my periods return on there own from my post pill Amenorrhoea.  Its been around 9 months. The doctors all say its "normal although rare" to have no periods for up to a year after the BCP.  I have an appt in a couple months to finally start getting some answers (that will be almost the one year mark).

I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and what i should expect at this appt?  Should i demand blood test and ultrasound?  I want to go there as fully informed as i can as the medical community has been less than helpful.  I wondered if anyone had any personal advice to experience.  Were you given clomid or? Do you have any questions you wish you would have asked?  I know it will all depend on what they find in my test as to what they prescribe, but just throwing the question out there..as i might as well do lots of research i have months of time on my hands..Confused

(goes back to drumming fingers and waiting..)

 Thanks ladies:)

First I want to say sorry that you have to go through this and sorry but I have no adivce however I do have a question.

Not to sound naive but all the information I've read is if it has been 60-90 days with no period to see your doctor. Have the doctors you've spoken with explained to you why this is considered "normal"? or why they wait a whole year?

  • At the very minimum I would ask for a full panel blood test to test everything from your hormone levels to thyroid...I can only speak for myself buT I went about 4 months without a period, and I asked for full blood work and ended up having a thyroid issue that basically shut everything down for those 4 months

  • I don't have any personal advice. Just wanted to say sorry you're dealing with this, how frustrating! I do, however, have a friend who has been in your shoes and yes, they gave her clomid. She now has 2 beautiful boys, ages 3 and 6.

In the research i have done there is a span of different opinions of what can be "normal" for waiting on your period to arrive naturally after the BCP. Some studies call normal 90 days, some 6 months and some a year.  I did consult my doctor at the 60 day mark as well as the 90 day.  As everyone should!  They told me i was a healthy young woman and to wait for my body to adjust normally.  And to give it at least a year.   That was my experience with doctors, although i hope other girls have better luck.

2 boys that's great!!!  Thanks for the support girls:)

And yes i asked about Provera and was told no.  That they would give me no prescriptions until the one year mark.  Its been frustrating.

This sounds insane to me.  Provera is not like clomid or other fertility drugs.  A progesterone challenge is something that would be totally indicated for a cycle more that 60 days, let alone 200.  How many second opinions have you gotten?

Opinions...4 over the whole time frame.  And that's actually alot for the middle of nowhere (where i live).  My main doctor actually told me that hormones in a pill got me into this mess and that another pill was not the first answer to get me out of it, when i suggested Provera. She said that the body should be allowed to "naturally regulate itself" (rolls eyes at hippie doctor).

  • I am surprised they haven't offered you Provera to jump start your cycle. I would find another doctor. As others said Provera is not a fertility drug.

Yeah I should qualify this by saying she doesn't have a thyroid problem. She has a unique condition where she doesn't ovulate on her own w/out help.

So, sounds like it's time for you to check w/a new doc! :) GL!

  • I had this same issue, as you can see in my sig.  In March, after about 5 months I asked them to do blood work.  Everything came back fine, so they said wait it out.  I got AF naturally about 3 weeks later, and then nothing after.  I had a follow-up Pap in May and my OBGYN told me that if I hadn't had my AF by the beginning of July to call the office to get a referral for an RE.  I went to the RE a couple of weeks ago and she basically said I am not having any symptoms and there is nothing that leads them to believe that there is anything going (blocked tubes, PCOS, etc) on other than a disconnect in my body where my brain is not telling my body to release hormones at the right times.  She made me feel like this is a fairly common thing.  We decided to do 3 cycles of Clomid+Trigger+TI+Progesterone and if I am not pregnant after those 3 cycles, they will do more invasive testing.  I had an U/S done before starting clomid and everything looked good.  I finished the Clomid last night and go in for a CD10 monitoring U/S on Friday to see how I am responding.  Also, before putting me on Clomid, they did a SA on DH.  The RE said they wanted to just make sure everything was good with him before starting me on the Clomid.  If there had been issues with the SA they probably would have recommended doing Clomid+IUI instead of TI.

Everybody's bodies are different and everybody's OBGYN's/RE's are different, so I have no idea what your's will do.  However, I just wanted to reach out and tell you what was going on in my case to give you some insight as to what might happen.  I can completely understand how frustrating it can be to have no idea what is going on with your body.  Hang in there, FX you get some answers soon!

Thank YOU!!!!!  Your story is so helpful!!  Good luck to you and thanks for taking the time to write as your story is pretty similar to mine.  Good to hear i am not alone in this issue.

Best of luck getting your BFP!

I'm surprised no doctor mentioned taking Provera to try and jumpstart your cycle. I'm sorry you're going through that.

This.  I'm assuming you've called OB's when you say doctors?  If it were me I wouldn't wait any longer.  For a doctor to tell you to wait a year to have ONE period is ridiculous and wouldn't trust their judgment.  I suggest finding an RE.

  • Wow! How frustrating! I have had nothing but long cycles since I got off the pill in October (I'm only one my 3rd cycle now - first was 120 days ending in provera, the second was 78 days ending on its own). I agree with the other ladies - definitely get some bloodwork done just to make sure everything is ok! GL!

  • I've been off BC for 4 mths and my cycles have been increasingly longer.  Today I am on CD 69, saw the doctor yesterday and she ordered blood test and ultrasound.  We meet again next week to go over the results. She indicated to me that this is fairly common with women that have been on BC for many years. (I have been on for 12 yrs)  She also said that in most cases they are not able to find a cause for it happening but do the testing just in case there is a larger underlying problem that might be contributing.  I have some friends that have gone through this also and resorted to trying acupuncture first and swear that it worked.  Not sure how I feel about it yet but might try it before using medication.

  • Yuck! My longest cycle was just over 100 days, 250 sounds ridiculous! I'd look for a new doctor. I'm all for hippie bullshit but there's a limit.
