Older Preemie Moms: Speech Therapy

Have any of your LOs started speech therapy?  How'd you come to the decision?  C is almost 20m old actual.  She has been getting EI services since right after she came home from the NICU and she has always done really well in all gross motor skills but I feel like she's lacking in speech.  She has words.  She has the appropriate number for her age.  I just feel like she should be talking more.  She rarely repeats words when prompted.  Words that I know she can say.  Is she just stubborn?  Should I give her more time?

She is being seen by her Dev. Specialist (EI) this week and I'm thinking of asking for a specific ST eval. but I'm hesitant to add yet another appointment into our schedule.  I also don't want her to miss out on help that she might need now. TIA!

Re: Older Preemie Moms: Speech Therapy

  • Sam has seen a ST for an eval and they said it was too early to start and to wait until we hit 18 months adjusted. He has maybe two words that he uses correctly. He mimics sometimes but does not speak. He babbles a lot, so I bet he thinks we understand him.

I'd have the eval and see what they think.

  • My DD is 9 mths (6 adjusted) and started seeing the ST last week. It is mostly for feeding issues but she is having a full evaluation done this week because the speech therapist thinks she should be 'saying' more consonants at this point in her development and said she would rather address the issue now.  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies I appreciate all the support.  I'm going to go ahead and ask for the eval.  We will see!
  • I was pretty proactive about speech therapy. Ds was delayed with gross motor skills and had some 'minor' neurological issues, so when he hit a year, at our developmental ped's advice we opted to add in speech. It's been amazing for him. He went from a few approximations at 15.5 months to now easily over 60 words at 18.5 months, and he can even count to ten (excluding seven, lol). It's blown us away. I love our speech therapist and she's been great. He might have done this regardless, but she definitely gave him a boost he needed. For us, I have always been very disappointed in EI, so I work with private therapists and go on recs from other parents and professionals.
