transitioning to milk

Is much easier than I thought it would be!  I tried swapping out bottles, but that didn't work, so I started decreasing the amount of formula and adding in WCM and he hasn't noticed a difference!  On top of that, he's eating more food during the day now, so he's taking less bottles!  When we started transitioning he was getting 4-5 bottles a day, anywhere from 5-8 oz. (on average 32oz a day), and now we're at 3-4 bottles, 4oz formula, 3oz milk.  I was so freaking nervous about the transition, since he had a really difficult time getting the food concept, but I am so happy with how things are turning out!

Plus, I found that around us he'll drink WCM alone, if it's in a specific sippy, and apparently with others he'll drink WCM from any sippy!

I know a lot have already transitioned - how did yours go, or how is it going in your in the process?

Re: transitioning to milk

  • Harrumph. Not going nearly as well here. He won't drink anything but water out of his sippy cup. Have tried many many cups, and the only one he'll use for water is that one you have in your siggy, and he won't drink milk or even juice out of any of them.

My latest attempt is to offer a strawberry yogurt smoothie in the sippy. It went a little better than milk, I think we got about 4 sips in him instead of the usual 1. I'm hoping if I can intro the smoothie, I can start thinning it out with milk.

ETA: We are done with bottles, though. I nurse 2x a day, and the dr. said that plus some yogurt is plenty of dairy. I'm going out of town in a month, though, I guess DH will give bottles at my usual nursing times that week.

  • M still BFs a lot- at least 4-5 times a day.  She is not so keen on drinking milk right now.  We've tried different sippys, regular cups, etc.  I did blend some milk with a bit of banana- and she drank about 4-5 sips of that, which is an improvement.  And a couple times I've made her a small bowl of cereal (Cheerios) with milk and she'll take a spoonful of milk as long as it has at least 1 soggy "O" on it.  It's a slow process that only amounts to an ounce or 2 of milk being taken in.

I'm not worried about her nutrition bc she still BFs a lot and eats plenty of yogurt and cheese, but I want to be in a place where I can drop 1-2 nursing sessions and so far it hasn't panned out.

  • Our transition started out really rocky because it turned out DD had a virus when we started. She refused all solids and liquids. Once that passed, and I got a special cup just for milk like you, she has loved the WCM.

  • Our main problem is DD won't take milk out of a sippy.  She drinks water out of anything but not milk.  I have cups that are soft spouts but we really need to work on that transition.  Often she drinks half her milk laying in the boppy then wants me to hold her while she drinks the rest so I think it's a comfort thing.

This is the same thing that is happening for us.  I transitioned fully by about 11.5 months.  She has been completely fine with WCM I just can't get rid of the bottle.  She drinks water fine out of her sippy but throws it if its milk!  I just keep offering it in the sippy first - after this weekend I am going to throw away the bottles and give her just sippy.  She eats EVERYTHING and gets lots of other dairy as well, so I am not worried if she goes on a milk strike.

  • We quit bottles and formula cold turkey.  He's done pretty well.  I offer him his milk a lot during the day and I'm lucky to get 8 oz. of milk in him per day, but I offer water too.  He's having plenty of wet diapers and he's getting yogurt and cheese as well, so I think he's alright.  He put up no resistance whatsoever to ditching the bottle, but he's never been attached to it - never held it himself, never carried it around, never went to bed with it.  All in all, our transition was pretty good.
  • One day I put whole milk in a straw cup and he drank the whole thing. Now he has a cup with lunch and dinner. He still nurses first thing and before his two naps. I SAH so he never really had bottles unless I was out of the house and hadn't had one since march so I didn't have any bottles to give up which helped.
