confused by how weeks are counted

So, I'm about 17 DPO, and I plugged that info into my tickers, but they are telling me (as you can see) that I am 4 weeks pregnant. This does not compute. Anybody know what gives? (this is obviously a question of HUGE importance Stick out tongue

They're counted from the first day of your LMP.

So does that mean a 40-week pregnancy is really only 38 weeks? It just seems odd to me - obviously nobody gets pregnant the day they get their period.

Yes, that is exactly what that means. There is about a two week period when you aren't "really" pregnant - depending on when you ovulated. If you ovulated late, the number could be even more "off". So yes, at 40 weeks pregnant, your baby is actually only about 38 weeks old.

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's how it is. They consider you 2 weeks pregnant at conception.

oh - but you need to go by the number of weeks given to you by your ticker or from your last menstrual period, because when you research information, that is typically how it's given. So if you are reading about pregnancy in week 12 - although your baby is only "10 weeks old", you are still 12 weeks pregnant. Don't over think it, haha.

And because very few women actually ovulate 14 days after their LMP, the easiest way to remember is is that the day you ovulate is the day you're 2w0d.

My husband is driving me crazy with this - every time I talk about how many weeks we are, he reminds me that the baby is actually two weeks less than that (his arguement that we should put off telling people). I remind him that we're going by what the doctor says. Ugh.
