Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you buy every size of shoe?

DD is almost out of her size 4s and I was looking at babysteals today... and debating about getting 4.5, 5, or even 5.5. Why would I get 4.5 if she'll be out of those in just a few more weeks? And why don't I get a 5.5 if they will last longer? I guess they could be just too big and she'll trip all over herself.

Do you buy each size or do you skip sizes?

  • It's not good for their walking development (or running) if they are wearing shoes that are too big or too uncomfortable. I would go every size that fits her well. It's a PITA but...it's part of having kids. They grow. It sucks.

  • Well in the 6 minutes it took to email DH and see if he agreed, they sold out of all the possible sizes. Oh well.

  • no but i want to! we just bought him a pair of crocs and they fit juuuuuuuust right aka will probably be too small in two weeks! He loves them though just their sizing is kind of annoying. He is a 5 but they only come in 4/5, 6/7 etc I wish they just had a 6 but i will probably buy another pair soon

  • We end up buying roughly every full size, skipping the half sizes.  We buy from a kid shoe store and they fit him and tell us to buy up half or a full size depending on the shoe.

He's been wearing his size 6 wides for about 4 months now.  When he was fit at the store when we bought them he technically was a size 5 in length, but not in width (they were a little snug), so we bought the 6 wides and he was able to walk in them just fine.   I thought he'd have outgrown them, but I just took out the insoles and had him step on it and he's still ok for length for a little while.

I was looking at the baby steals today too, but they had already sold out of size 7 wides which is what I would be buying next.

  • Dang it!!!  I keep missing the stride rite sales on babysteals! :(  They are sold out of our sizes now.  I buy every size.  Sigh.  I've been doing every other size in Walmart shoes though.  Right now he has a size 6 in Walmart special and I'm looking for a 6.5 in Stride Rite.  I can't believe how expensive shoes are for tiny people!

  • I didn't even know they made half sizes for toddlers! We've been buying full size. When I see a good deal on cute shoes though, I buy in the next size up than what he's wearing so that when he suddenly grows out of his size 5s we won't be stuck spending $20+ on a pair of shoes for him.

  • I usually only buy shoes in store and if DD is with me. Her feet are so strangely sized some shoes she is 3.5, some she is 5. I don't get it. Unless someone is having an awesome sale I buy shoes that she will hopefully fit into "someday soon".
  • Honestly, I haven't bought DD too many shoes, but I have just followed the basic size 4, 5, etc. Her feet have grown so quickly in the last few months, that the half sizes don't seem worthwhile to me.

  • I buy shoes when I find a deal.  I always buy various sizes.  I work for a big online shoe retailer so it makes it easy and I get a discount (yay) but before DD was born we had awesome Dr Seuss chucks that went on sale for cheap.  I bought several styles in different sizes that way I'd have some for later.  I've definitely skipped sizes but for the most part I have a little of everything.

I always buy a little big. Big enough he can walk just fine but has some growing room. DS has a big foot & he grows like crazy. But I would never buy anything too big that would hurt his development

  • I've gotten every size, but am just now getting half sizes for my older son sometimes. I'd rather get them more pairs than have them trip in too-big shoes.
