Past Abdominal Surgery prior to C Section?

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew if having had a past abdominal surgery contributed to needing a C/S or to it being more problematic to have one?

14 years ago I had a large 26cm tumor removed along with my ovary fallopian tube and appendix. Because the tumor was so large, my scar is up and down and starts about 2 inches above my belly button and goes allll the way down. If I have a C/S they with have to cut into my existing scar and scar tissue. I will basically have a cross.

Does anyone know if this will hurt or help? TIA

Re: Past Abdominal Surgery prior to C Section?

  • It really only depends on if they cut into your uterus.  The concern is that surgeries on your uterus will increase chance of uterine rupture to some degree.  It depends on if they just cut on the outside of your uterus or all the way through in your previous surgeries.  If your uterus was not cut open in your previous surgery, there is probably no reason you can't have a vaginal delivery. As far as your abdomen scar, that should not qualify you for c-section alone.  It may take a few more minutes for OB to cut you open if there is scar tissue present from previous surgeries.  Scar tissue depends mainly on skill and technique of your previous surgeon.  Techniques are used today that weren't used 14 years ago that limit scar tissue and adhesions.  Today,  many drs are becoming proficient with using a DaVinci robot to perform tumor removals from abdomens which limit scar tissue and adhesions.  I had this robotic myomectomy surgery a year ago and my dr still is learning toward a c-section although I'm pushing for a vbac.  Do some googling, make a list of questions, and ask your doc.  GL!

Great question! I am in the same boat. I had my right ovary removed in 2008 b/c of a benign tumor. I'll have to remember to ask at my 26 week u/s.

I ended up talking with my original surgeon. He stated that the only what PP said, that the only concern is if they had gone into the uterus, which they did not. He confirmed they will cut through my past scar but said that will not be a problem.
