Pregnant after 35

Nasal Bone Length

I am 36 and just had an advanced maternal age ultrasound done on Monday. Everything was normal except the nasal bone length I was told was shown to be short. I have been referred to a specialist for another ultrasound. I am really trying not to think the worst but it is just so hard. I wondered if anyone else had gone through this that could give me some positive encouragement. I have just been having a really hard time dealing with this and can't stop worrying. Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

Re: Nasal Bone Length

  • I have no experience with this but just wanted to say I feel for you. I can't imagine the level of worry. A lot of times everything works out just fine, just try to stay positive, I know that can't be easy.

  • My cousin just had a son last year that was "missing" his nasal bone, and he turned out to be just fine (it was there, it was short and he had no down syndrome). I myself just had a baby in April that had two soft markers for Downs at my level 2 ultrasound and she was just fine :-)  good luck to you.

  • Ok, my ignorance s going to show here...

I thought that if there was a nasal bone at all then downs was out? I thought the marker for downs syndrom was the absence of the bone completely. What if the family just has genetically small noses?

I hope the specialst eases your worries.

You are right! I was thinking neck measurement. I have never heard of nasal bone length.

  • No nasal bone showing up on an early pregnancy scan is another marker.  About 3 out 4 babies with Down's syndrome will not show a nasal bone a the time of the NT scan.
