Yeah, I know what you mean. For me, personally, I would prefer to host an afternoon party but as a mom I guess I like mid-day better. Otherwise I have to figure out whether to feed my kid before the party, plus he'll load up on the cake too close to dinner-time.
I would prefer 11-1 because DD still can nap and by 1 pm, I can get in a nap for her. 2 pm and that screws any chance of a nap that day and guaranties a cranky kid. I actually had ours 10-12 and we had the best turnout of any of her parties.
I did 10-12 and people liked it. We had a little (very small amount) of cake and then sent the kids home. I know it sounds weird, but it worked. You could serve lunch if you wanted to. I'm used to eating early. On our block, the kids parties have been 10-12 and even though at first I thought it was weird to feed the kids cake and send them home for lunch, it works out well. Very quick and easy party. I like to get in and get out.
My kids at age 4 still took a mid day rest or nap plus they are up early. I love the 9 or 9:30 to 11/11:30 time slot. 2 hours is plenty of time for a party for 4 year olds. I don't enjoy the later afternoon parties as to me that just seems to kill more of the day. Most of the parties we have gone to and hosted in recent times have started between 9 and 10 and last 2 hours.
For us earlier is better, the only problem we tend to run into is that we do have a few invitees that do sunday morning church so it is a problem for them. You can't please everyone so when in doubt I say strive to do what works best for your family!

Thanks everyone! I ended up scheduling 11-1. It seems that a lot of kids in DS's preschool have activities: soccer, gymnastics, etc. in the morning. DS has karate 9-10. Now the waiting game for RSVPs begins
Re: Yet another party question
I would prefer a little later because DD still naps. She just got invited to a 4th bday party and it starts at 1:00 which is perfect for us.
good luck
