Tips for swollen feet?

In this disgusting heat wave, plus it's mid-July, I'm sure many of you are experiencing swollen feet.  My doctor told me yesterday I had to wear compression hose.  Does anyone have any other methods of relief?  My hubby rubs my feet (he hates feet), I elevate them, soak them, swim...nothing helps.  Am I just doomed to wear the compression socks?

Re: Tips for swollen feet?

  • Someone told me to squeeze lemon into my water.  I think it helped?

  • Not sure if this will help you but it seems to help me. In prenatal yoga we put our legs up a wall and just lay there on the floor for a while. It seems to help a lot! Hope you find something that helps!
  • I am so glad for some tips....DH told me last night jokingly that my cankles looked like the michelin tire man....now I can't get that picture out of my head!

  • In addition to the water, elevation, icing, etc, I also think getting enough sleep is really important because that's when your body is in restore mode. I've noticed that following nights when I haven't gotten enough, my feet swell more easily.
  • I read somewhere that cold cabbage leaves help draw the water out, your wrap your feet in them and once they are wet you replace w. new leaves

I think it helps! But it could be placebo effect ;)  I usually have a glass of lemonade at some point during the day (way more refreshing when I'm really thirsty.) But I drink a TON of water daily too- like well over 100 ounces.  I can tell when I haven't had enough- the next morning I'm more swollen and headachey.

I am wondering if my lack of swelling has been because I make fresh squeezed lemonade for MH (it's supposed to help prevent kidney stoones) and I have a few diluted glasses of it everyday.

But yep, as PPs said, lots of water, lots and lots...if you can't stomach water all the time, get seltzer, and make sure its sodium free! I started diluting my raspberry lemonade with seltzer and it's a fun spritzer type drink to have with dinner.

Damm you are a good wife Tara!

  • My girlfriend who has blood clot issues just told me about great wicking compression socks she got for running at Target. I might try those too.

  • I am a bartender and was having an awful time with swollen feet and ankles. I have a specialty store by my place that has compression socks and special shoes etc. Not only do they have special maternity socks but get this....they were covered by my insurance!!!!! Good thing because they run $60 A PAIR!!!! So I put them on (REALLY hard to do by yourself) and let me tell you....my feet and legs haven't felt this good since before I was pregnant. I wish I would have discovered them months ago! I have changed my outfits a little to accomodate wearing knee high socks when it is 100 degrees out.  I look like a jock now but so many friends have said I look adorable. Either way I would still wear them. Can't tell you how wonderful they are!!!!!!

  • I had a kidney stone at 7 months last pregnancy and I was sure it was labor because nothing else could hurt that bad. Childbirth did, for the record. If lemonade will help prevent them, as soon as the GD is gone, I'll make that. Yummy. As for the feet, I was having a dreadful time a couple of weeks ago and none of the tricks (didn't try compression socks or cabbage leaves) were working. I finally had some success sleeping with a pillow under my feet for a few days. It wasn't tremendously comfy, but it totally worked for me. I'm completely unswollen for the first time in a couple of months.
