exercise during the "two week wait"

Hi everyone!  I am new to the bump, and have been mostly posting on the TTTC boards, but had a question that I thought was more appropriate for here.

Essentially, I am just wondering what type of exercise is appropriate for the "two week wait". My exercise routine is really comprised of power walking or hiking.  I think hiking is too intense, but what about power walking? My heart rate definitely becomes elevated and I certainly break a sweat.  Could this be detrimental to ovulation/potential implantation?

We have been TTC for about a year, and I have been recently put on clomid, so I am trying to make every decision be optimal for TTC (as I am sure we all are).  Would it be better to abstain from exercise completely during this time?

Re: exercise during the "two week wait"

  • I am not sure what is recommended, but from my experience, I think it's fine to continue your normal exercise during the 2WW.  I didn't even suspect I was pregnant with DS until I was over 6 weeks along and I had been running pretty intensely the whole time up to then.

  • Like PP, I think you can continue your normal routine.  I backed from from running 3 miles to running 2 miles, but I also got pregnant in June when it was HOT.  So, I backed off due to the heat and not the 2ww.

  • Exercise to the point of breaking a sweat is perfectly healthy while pregnant and thus in the 2ww. Stress can affected ovulation and exercise helps beat stress so it may actually improve your odds of ovulating naturally (depending on why you are taking Clomid). Based on the types of activities you mentioned, they wouldn't impede implantation.  If you are concerned speak to your RE but I can almost guarantee they will encourage that type of activity. Maybe don't start training for a fitness comp or marathon for the first time while TTC, but moderate regular exercise is healthy.

  • I was doing a pretty intense routine when I was TTC and I continued it through the 2  ww and beyond.  I'm sure you'll be fine.  Even while pregnant, I was working out and my heart rate was in the fat burn zone, which is perfectly safe.
  • Thanks everyone!  I will no longer be nervous to feel my heart pumping a little bit!

  • Not sure who prescribed your clomid - so hopefully you are being monitored.  My RE gave me specific rules when being on clomid - no jumping as clomid causes your ovaries to swell.  Therefore, when jumping they could twist.  My RE recommended swimming, walking, basically anything that is more lower intensity.  I think you are fine to continue walking.  FYI - there is a trouble TTC board which is an awesome group of women who have been trying to conceive for more than a year or have an identified fertility issue.  I wish you the best of luck.

  • Thanks for asking your question.  I am TTC and currently in a TWW, thought due to my age :( it is highly unlikely I can conceive,  But I was wondering about the TWW.

I have read what other mom's have said here and expert sources like Runner's World and think listening to your body is the way to go.

That said, I did skip a 25 mile bike ride this weekend becasue I'm in the TWW - even though it is so unlikely I'd be PG.  My bike buddy was out of town and I thought going for a 25 mile ride on my skinny tire bike in the country riding like I'm on the Jr. Tour de France was too high of risk of falling and getting into some trouble getting help if I needed it.  It felt a little silly but I would have felt even more silly if I did take a spill.

Other than that, I have been keeping up my normal, and relativley excessive, routine.  Though I did have to skip the pool/gym on Sunday because I was exhausted.  Thought the exhaustion might be a "sign" but probably not because I feel fine now - 2 days later.  Still hoping for a miracle.

Good luck to you.  Hope you have some positive results by now.
