Coed baby shower

Apparently I have two baby showers in the works. One is going to be thrown by two of my aunts and is going to be a "family" shower. The other is going to be thrown by my best friend, and will be a "friends" shower. I'm going to make the friends shower "coed", mostly so that DH will have his guy friends there, and so that DH's friends' spouses can come without being uncomfortable (as opposed to coming to an all-girls shower by themselves with other people they may or may not even know).

Any ideas for making the coed shower not a complete bore for the guys? This will likely be more like a halfway high school reunion (as we have all known each other since high school), but I want to make sure the guys (DH included) don't feel out of place or like they're in a party meant for chicks.

  • As long as there is beer for the guys, they will be fine. Ha.

A cute idea for your co-ed shower is to have framed baby pictures of you and your dh on different tables at the venue/house.

Depending on the time of the year and where you live, you could always have some yard games set up outside for the guys and a grill on the patio for hotdogs, etc. But again, they will be fine with beer. Ha.

  • I agree with PP - beer is always good :)  If it were me, I would probably also try to keep the traditional baby shower "games" to a minimum for a coed shower - especially assuming that you can do some of that stuff at another if you want.  I'm having a work shower that will be coed, and I imagine that it will be more like a cookout or BBQ than a shower.

  • I've been to one co-ed shower. I thought the host had a super cute idea of setting up a poker game where the more diapers you came with, the more poker chips the guys got to play with. Afterward, I asked DH if he had fun and he said, "No. Bringing guys to a baby shower and giving us 'something to do' is like dressing us up in tutus and then 'letting us play football in the front yard'." Lol. He has vowed never to attend another. But, I think he's a big ol' grump about it and most guys would be more laid-back. For showers in my friend group, the guys all get together and go to a bar or go to play golf or something together.

  • I agree that traditional games should be avoided for a co-ed shower. Maybe make it luau theme and focus on celebrating together. Of course the girls can gather for the gift opening, but make it fun and not so babyish.

  • Ditto the others: beer and a TV with some sports game on.

The boys aren't really going to care about feeling involved with the baby aspects of the party, I would guess.

  • I'm agreeing with the no-traditional-games idea. We're hoping to invite guys and girls to ours, and want no games like we usually have seen at showers because they (let's face it) tend to bore even the most excited guest! And we also decided not to open presents; I'll be huge and exhausted and the guys want nothing of that, and the girls get bored after a while.

I'd say that as long as there's booze and lots of mingling, it should be fine. Also make sure the theme isn't so girly, because not all guys (or girls) feel comfortable with that. And same with cutesy themes.
