I don't know if this is one my mom made up or what but she changed that prayer when we were kids to "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, angels guard me through the night, and wake me with the morning light."
Less morbid, lol.
ETA: should have read responses first. Clearly that prayer is common. Lol
I found a little night time prayers book for kids at a resale shop. DH chose one and we read it every night, now DS can say the whole thing on his own:
I said the "if I die before I wake" part as a child and it didn't bother me until I was much older. I didn't have any fears of dying in my sleep, etc. However, it's been bothering me saying this part with my DD. I really like the other suggestions.
We have friends that say the "if I die" with their daughters but it always kind of freaked me out too! Right now we just say prayers for him out loud but soon will probably switch to a standard prayer so he can learn it. We have several neat children's prayer books and there are a few nighttime prayers in there. We'll probably pick one of those.
Re: If your kid says bedtime prayers
We do. My mom didnt like the "die" part either so she taught us:
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray to you my soul to keep. Please keep me safe throughout the night, and wake me with the morning light."
We use the same with Hen.
Ok, so you change it to:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Guide me safely through the night,
And wake me with the morning light.
Amen.
We say different things each night...
How about something like this?
Father, we thank thee for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light;
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the things we should,
To be to others kind and good;
In all we do, in work or play,
To grow more loving every day.

Or this
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep:
May God guard me through the night
And wake me with the morning light.
Amen.
The "if I die" part creeped me out too, so I modified it a little bit:
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Guide me through the long dark night,
And wake with me at morning light.
We have a plaque on his wall with Angel of God:
Angel of God, my guardian dear;
To whom God's love commits me here;
Ever this day be at my side;
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
I usually point to it and say it for him and then add special intentions at the end.
This is what we say as well. I have got to do better about doing this every night. Alot of times I am too tired and just lie him down.
I found a little night time prayers book for kids at a resale shop. DH chose one and we read it every night, now DS can say the whole thing on his own:
Lord, keep me safe this night
And take away my fears.
May angels guard me while I sleep
Till morning light appears
My DD has a little sheep that says this prayer:
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Angels watch me through the night,
until I wake in morning light.
Amen.

Ours is:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul will keep
When in the morning light I wake
Show me the path of love to take. Amen.
