High-Risk Pregnancy

In the hospital with High BP

Hi! I'm new to this thread. I was on the Pregnant after loss thread cuz my last pregnancy ended in miscarriage.

I'm 23 weeks Thank G-d and have been having high blood pressure readings at home so went to the hospital and was admitted it's my second day here was already here for 2 nights.  I was surprised they admitted me.

I grew up with high blood pressure but it was better after surgery last year and I wasn't on any medication. I was getting readings of 145/95 and as high as 160/104 but now that I'm in the hospital it's fine... like mostly 130/85. Go figure.

So now the doctors are deciding if they should let me go home without meds and just take it easy since that seems to bring my pressure down or to put me on labatalol...

I don't really understand what it means to take it easy? The doctor says like in the hospital.. Well in the hospital I am in bed all day... This is my first so I don't have kids to take care of so that makes it easier... Still not sure what they are going to decide...

Looking for support! Thank you for reading my post!

Re: In the hospital with High BP

  • when I was pregnant w/DD I spent a few days in the hospital  w/high BP then they sent me home to 'take it easy'  and monitor my BP every 4 hrs...........

I wasn't exactly sure what that meant either, so I asked......they said I could try 'modified bed rest' where you're allowed to get up once in a while to shower or food prep etc.....but to keep an eye on my BP when I was up and if it started spiking I need to go to full bed rest. after about a week at home I noticed every time I moved around for more then 10 mins or so i'd spike, get dizzy and get a headache.

so I would say just listen to your body, it knows what's best!!

Hopefully you can go home soon!

I had PIH with my son (and pre-e & GD), it sucked. I ended up on bed rest at 34 weeks & was induced at 37 weeks because my BP was just not doing what it was suppose to. That coupled with sugars getting higher in my urine & my platelet count coming down, the baby just had to get out.

My biggest fear for this pregnancy is going on bed rest again. Now that I have my son I just don't know how I would do it. But ultimately we need these babies to cook as long as possible & laying in bed isn't that hard, even with a toddler (and a supportive family around you).

    Good luck!!

  • Thank you so much for your support!! I will let y'all know how I'm doing.. My latest pressure was 142/99 which I'm not upset about cuz I was a little embarrassed to be here and my blood pressure was normal. I was worried I'd go home and like you both my blood pressure would go up as soon as I got out of bed.

so now my doctor knows I'm not crazy my bp is actually acting strange. They will either put me on meds or modified bedrest... I don't know what I'd rather myself cuz I don't really want meds in my system but you are right bedrest is hard. They didn't tell me bedrest though they want me to relax. not as bad as "real" bed rest!

I guess we will wait and see.

Thank you for caring and for your responses they really helped me to know I am not alone!

  • I started labetalol last week and my blood pressure has come down significantly. I'm not on official bedrest, but when I'm home from work I try to do as little as possible and (as hard as it is to do) rely on Jeff to do the more strenuous household things. Letting myself sit down and not feel the need to DO EVERYTHING RIGHT NOWWWWWW has been the hardest thing, especially since I was a single mom for many, many moons and this whole Being Married thing is still new to me.

My only real advice is to listen to your body. You can feel when your bp is up and you need to relax, so listen to your intuition. Don't let your brain make you feel guilty about doing what's best for you and your baby. =)

I'm glad your body is responding positively to the labetalol. I'm still waiting to see if the doctor is going to put me on any medication at all. I have a feeling they will since it's 142/99 today while doing nothing in the hospital. I don't know if once I'm in labetalol if I will need to do resting as maybe my body will respond positively to the medication. I guess only time will tell.

For the meantime I am so bored here in the hospital.. Today is my second or third day if you count the day I was admitted. I'm trying not to get too bored :)

Thank you everyone for sharing your situations! Like I said before it helps to know I'm not alone.

  • At 26 weeks I was put in the hospital for my bp. I was put on meds and bed rest. Have stayed on bed rest since then but I also had ptl. As of today they changed me from just high bp to pre-e. Not to thrilled with it but it is what it is.

GL hopefully you can go home soon. Being stuck at the hospital stinks.

I am now home was in the hospital for a week! No sign of pre-e Thank G-d!

They put me on labetalol and I was told to take it easy. Not real "bed rest" but to take it easy.

Where you put on complete bed rest? modified bed rest etc. Like did your bp react to the medication. With medication and taking it easy my BP stays about 135/85 most of the time. a few times the bottom number was over 100 and they don't want that but if I stay on the couch it stays really low.

MY problem is that it really goes up and down so fast and so much. I feel sick a lot because my BP is so unstable.

I will see my OB and my renal specialist on Monday and Tuesday hopefully they can advise me more.

Thank you for caring. Sorry you got diagnosed with Pre-E only good thing is that you are getting closer toward the end. the further you can get the better obviously but at 26 weeks is much worse!

Have you in my thoughts and prayers!
