C-sections

RCS w/ stairs

I didn't have stairs last time I had a c-section so, along with taking care of DS once I get home, one thing that's really been on my mind is being able to go upstairs to my own bed. I just can't imagine a few nights stay in the hospital and coming home and not being able to sleep in my own bed.  Obviously, I remember enough to know I'll be so sore I won't be bounding up and down them, but if you've recently had a RCS and your memory is more fresh than mine, do you think I could go up and down them gingerly say, twice a day?

Re: RCS w/ stairs

  • I think as long as its one slow trip up an one slow trip down a day you'll be fine.  I had a really easy recovery but the steps hurt for a few days (we have a few steps into the house I had to do regularly.  Do you have any bedrooms on the main floor? You might want to plan on staying there as a backup and put everything you'd need to shower/use the restroom (pads/etc) on the main floor bath as well.

  • I would like to know too. I have stairs this time, but not with the other two. And the bathroom and bedrooms are upstairs, so I'm thinking I might be confined up there?

  • When I had my staples removed the week after my c/s the doc said I could use the stairs. I know when I first got home from the hospital I was afraid to so I didn't even try.
  • I had a my c-section on a Monday, then did the stairs at home on Thursday. I had a friend who was told to only do stairs once a day after her c-section, so I was really surprised that I didn't receive any instructions about them.

That trip up the stairs was the only one for a few days since the only reason I was home was to get clothes and take care of a couple of things before going BACK to the hospital to stay with DS while he was on antibiotics. I don't remember it being horrible...I might have even gone up and down a couple of times getting stuff together to go back to the hospital. Overall I had a pretty easy recovery, though.

Be smart. Take it slow. Be prepared ahead of time in case you need to sleep downstairs, or have enough stuff upstairs to where you won't have to go up and down.

  • We had a 2 story house with the master up when I had c/s 1 and 2.  I was easily able to go up to my bed from the time we got home.  I took it slow and limited the number of trips (probably 3-4 trips the first few days home), but it was seriously not the big deal everyone made it out to be.  After the first few days, I was operating normally.

  • I've never had an issue with stairs with any of my c-sections (I've had 3).

  • I did stairs multiple times a day starting four days PP with DD and two days PP with DS.

  • When I was discharged from my RCS my OB said stairs were absolutely fine -- and they were.  We have an older 3-story house and I went up and down stairs several times a day without problems.

I was "allowed" to go up and down 2 times a day for the first 2 weeks. It worked out. I would come down in the AM, my husband brought the PnP down for me & I just stayed down until bed time. I have a bathroom on the first floor & everything I would need through out the day. It worked out well. It really did hurt going up and down the steps at first!

  • I didn't have a RCS, but I did have a toddler and stairs after my twins were born.  Honestly, I had to remind myself to slow down and that I just had major surgery because I felt pretty pretty good even on the stairs.  I thought I'd be more sore, but by the time I left the hospital I felt great except for some fluke nerve pain.
  • Just 1 CS but I had no issues with the stairs whatsoever and walked them multiple times a day.
