Natural Birth

Watched Pregnant in America last night

and went to bed at 1 to get up at 6. Bad plan, but... did anyone else think that the baby was not going to make it ? Earlier in the movie there is a mention that midwife lost one (woman or baby?) a little while after they interviewed and I totally made an assumption. I cried for like 10 minutes before I realized it was going to be ok.

  • I thought the same thing when I watched that. I also thought the husband was a total douchebag.

  • Funny, I just watched that last night as well. I appreciated the information and the statistics, but I was confused by the ending as well. It was so drawn out and dramatic and for what? It seemed she was ok. That was a strange ending....

But I will say I wish I could move to Holland and have my baby in my home there with that Dr./Midwife guy who does 85% of all births at home...that's AWESOME!

I was concerned too, and then the baby was fine and they NEVER told us what was wrong.  It was almost like they implied that there wasn't really anything wrong with her after all and the hospital just was trying to mess with them. I felt so bad for his wife, I was hoping she'd punch him when he was in her face and she was throwing up.

Ditto. It felt, to me, like he set up that feeling on purpose, and I think it took away from their overall message.

I thought the same thing.  I couldn't take the documentary seriously because I thought he was such a twatwaffle.

  • I haven't watched it since it came out, but I have a friend who knew the "dad" and I think he was the spearhead of the movie idea.  It was confusing at the end, but if I remember correctly, they did feel going to the hospital was good, but that they were treated differently b/c they had a homebirth so they weren't sure if the doctors kept the baby longer b/c of that, right?  I do also remember it being a little too sensationalized and wasn't sure it made the point about options to birth at home are good for low-risk situations so much as anti-hospital.

I think the reason they went to the hospital was a breathing issue, right?

  • Meh, I thought it was in poor taste. Like pp said, sensationalized. It felt like the guy was trying to make things more dramatic than they needed to be, but it didn't really support anything else the movie was about. Needless to say, I don't recommend it to any of my friends.

  • I watched The Business of Being Born before this one. I only got half way through though. I felt like it was a cheap knock off of the bofbb.

  • The dad is so annoying.  It absolutely amazed me that he had the balls to complain about the hospital helping his child.  I thought it would have been great if he had spun it so it was like hey, you can have a home birth, but make sure to have a back up plan just in case.  It's the smart thing to do... but no, he just had to complain about them helping. Gah!
