When to transition to crib? HELP!

So, I have a unique situation and am not sure what to do. Any advice is appreciated.

I just moved from Colorado to Oregon and am living with my son (DH to move in Sept) in my parents home until our home is ready to move into in mid-September.  My parents bought a crib for their home (my mom will be babysitting when I return to work) but LO has been sleeping in his rock n' play for the past 5 weeks.

I tried transitioning him to the crib (with white noise and swaddled, he does not take a paci) about 5 days ago and he was up every 2 hours. In his RnP he was sleeping a 6hr stretch/feed/3hr stretch. I went back to the RnP after 2 nights and he went back to his 6/feed/2-3 routine.

When we move into our home, we will have a crib different than the one at my parents.

Do I transition him to the crib now and deal with the crazy sleep schedule again?

Do I wait to transition until we are in our home?

Did I already mess up the routine by putting him back in the RnP?

Re: When to transition to crib? HELP!

  • I don't know how big RnP's are rated for, but assuming that your son will still fit safely inside of it until September, I would wait.  It sounds like your son would be over 4 months old at the time that you move.  At that point, babies can learn to self-soothe and you would be able to re-establish your bedtime routine in a new place with a new bed, and if you have to you could let him cry it out a bit.  Obviously do what you think is best, but I think it would just be easier on all of you to let him sleep wherever works best for now and to work on getting a really great routine once you are established in your new home.

  • I doubtbit would be a big transition from one crib to the other. Mostly what i hear is the transitions from rocknplay to crib are tough. I assume it is due to the amount of extra space the babies have in the crib. Your going to do what is most comfortable for you and your lo but also lo will be sleeping in that crib anyway during the days so why not start now? ava went straight to the crib we had issues trying to get her to sleep in our pack n play justnso shes used to it when we travel etc. Lol babiesare so funny
  • Assuming he is not over the weight limit or too long for what he is sleeping in now, I would imagine it would be fine!
  • My son was diagnosed with GERD today & he has only slept in his R&P, and looks like that's where he's gonna stay for now.I don't plan on transitioning him until around the 6 mnth mark when my Pedi says he will outgrow the GERD. Right now he can't lie flat or he screams in pain and arches his back & it breaks my heart because he's so uncomfortable! I don't see the harm in keeping him in the R&P until he's a little older. It might be harder to transition him to his crib, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it :)
