How to organize nursery?

Does anyone have any good advice on how to organize a nursery when it comes to clothes and other essentials? I haven't had a chance to start on this yet because I'm waiting to see what I get at my shower, so I haven't bought much of anything. I was just thinking ahead and it seems slightly overwhelming. The only storage space I'll have is a closet with a high shelf, a dresser that has 3 drawers and a side cabinet, and one of those Target bookshelves that has the 9 suqares. What clothes to hang, what to fold? What should be easily accessible? I'm probably overthinking this a bit, I'm having a FTM moment. Thanks for any help.

Re: How to organize nursery?

  • With my daughters clothes I folded all the onsies, sleepers, and pants. I hung up all her dresses and outfits. I used baskets to hold diapers, socks, bibs, I had a trunk for all her blankets.

Just remember their things are really small. A lot can go in a small area. You most likely have enough storage space with out even using the high shelf unless you want to put some baskets on there.  Keeping stuff in categories always helps too. Like keeping the bibs and burp clothes together. All diapering stuff together. Once you start setting it all up it gets easier.

  • Sounds like you have a great setup.  In addition to everything tma said, I went to Michael's Craft Store and got these three little boxes (with lids) to sit on top of my baby girls dresser.  They pink, black, and green. I just stacked them on top of each other.  And in each one is something different.  One has her socks and tights, the other has her aspirator and creams and qtips, and the last one has just nonsense stuff and hairbows.  I like to keep the small things up and all together.

  • That is plenty of space!

DD's dresser was (and is) organized like this:

Top Drawer: basket of socks, misc. headbands, clips, etc. nail clippers, extra soaps, lotions, etc.

Second Drawer: Outfits.  I'd fold the outfits together (pants and tops) so there was no fumbling around in 2 seperate drawers.

    Third Drawer: Pajamas

    Bottom Drawer: Extra blankets/sheets.

I hang up dresses and skirts.  I would use that high shelf for dipaer storage.

She has 2 shelves under her changing table.  On the 1st I have 3 small baskets.  One for diapers.  One for wipes, diaper creme, lotion I'm using.  One for shoes.

There are 2 larger baskets underneath.  One holds her additional lovies and another holds baby towels and wash cloths.

I'd use the Target shelving for books and additional nicknacks.  It'll get filled eventually when you figure out your system.

  • Thanks ladies! In my mind it seems like all the storage space in the world wont be enough.
  • I have those over-the-door shoe bags all over my house, including one inside the nursery closet.  Right now there are things light baby nail clippers, mittens, extra pacifiers, samples of lotions, etc.  It's great for all the tiny odds and ends.  My doors NEVER close properly when I use the hooks those things come with so I use picture hanging hooks and just nail it into the door.  Container Store has a nice one on sale right now for $12.99.

Also, I just saw this on a blog last night.  Our PnP is a very basic model, but I wanted something to stash extra dipes and wipes for middle of the night changes.  This seems perfect.  https://www.amazon.com/Prince-Lionheart-Diaper-Depot-Clear/dp/B000056OUO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2M4Q52EY967II&coliid=I2HFEOLOYJS9M7

  • It sounds like your setup is similar to ours. In LO's closet, I just hung her dresses and outfits. In her dresser, I used the top drawer for her CD stash, diaper cream, wipes and grooming stuff. 2nd drawer is full of her onesies and sleepers. I also have a 9 cube thing from Target and plan on using the top 3 cubes for books, and the bottom 6 will have baskets for toys, socks and shoes, hats and accessories. I also got a long, flat plastic storage tub to fit under her crib for anything miscellaneous.

  • I have a drawer for onesies a socks, two drawers for folded clothes (usually separated by size and a drawer for blankets, sleepers and swaddlers. In the closet, I hang complete outfits, dresses or clothes that are for months down the line. Baby towels and washcloths are folded in a closet organizer. HTH!

Good idea. I will have to look into getting one of those!

  • DS has a 6 drawer dresser that is also his changing table. One drawer is diapers, wipes, hand sanitizer, ointments, burp cloths, receiving blankets.

Then there's a drawer each for:

    onsies & shirts

    pants,

    PJs

sheets,  changing pad covers, crib savers, & multi-use pads

    socks, bibs & hats

His closet is in size order of dressier outfits on the left, jackets, then bigger new clothes w/ tags toward the right.

His shoes are on a top shelf of the closet & the floor of the closet is just extra storage.

He has 2 sets of built in drawers that we've used for the clothes he's outgrown.

He has another built in cabinet that we use to store blankets & boxes of diapers.

  • I divided stuff up by sizes and put them in the drawers in ascending order.  Highest drawer was smallest clothes.  I'm also only washing the first size stuff to see how long she'll even be in there.  The only things I have hanging are swim suits and dresses, along with her baptism outfit since my Mom brought it over on Saturday.

In the changing table (which is a dresser) the top drawer has dividers in it so I washed and folded all of the receiving blankets/swaddlers/bath things and divided that up in there, then filled the rest of the drawers with unopened packs of diapers and wipes so I could actually see the floor in the closet.

    good luck!

  • I felt overwhelmed when I though of this too but it worked out. We put in a new closet organizer with a tower. So in the tower I have baskets labeled with hats, toys, bibs and then put books and a few extra things in the 2 remaining spaces. For clothes we have a lot but all neutral since we're team green so I don't have a ton yet  but I decided to hang everything that way I can see them all. I ordered closet rod organizers to seperate between months. As for onsies I put those and the socks in the dresser. Diapers, wipes, lotions, creams all went in the first drawer of the changing dresser. Second drawer is receiving blankets and swaddles and the last drawer is for the sheets and changing pad covers. I bought a basket for the actual large blankets people gave us or made and put that next to the rocker for easy access. I think it'll work well for us and if something doesn't, we'll change it when LO comes! IMO it's all about organizing to how you feel will work the best for you! Nothing is wrong!

  • I'm doing a combo of what PP's have said.  I'm CDing so the top drawers of his dresser will have CD's and supplies then onsies, socks and pajamas.  After that I'm going to sort things by size so I will know which drawer to get into.
