2nd Trimester

didn't take prenatals with dha

Ive been taking the Kroger brand prenatals because they're comparable to the expensive Stuart brand, but I JUST now realized theres no dha in it. I'm being paranoid thinking I hindered my child's brain development or something. I didn't take DhA in the beginning because they were all made from fish products. is it too late to take a vitamin with dha now or should I just continue taking the same ones? Thanks

  • Your baby is fine. If you really want DHA, switch to another PNV or add a supplement.

  • I'm sure your baby will be fine. No harm in adding the dha now though. I use target brand dha supplements (because my vitamin doesn't have DhA either). They are small, easy to swallow, and made with plant based dha.

If it makes you feel any better I'm horrible at remembering to take my vitamins at all, my doctor says there's really no harm unless you don't eat a somewhat nutritious diet, and even then everything would still probably be fine.

  • Mine don't have DHA. I'm thinking I should just grab an extra pill with just DHA in it but my OB never mentioned the importance of DHA so I'm not too worried.
  • My OB told me if you can afford them buy them, if not its no big deal. I think its one of those things where all Drs have different opinions about. I tried a few brands and realized I couldnt handle them, so I have not been taking them.

  • All is fine, I am sure, but remember that their brains will continue developing for many, many years to come. I would start now and just not worry.

  • I'm sure your baby will be just fine. Look at it this way - I'm pretty sure a lot of our moms didn't even take prenatals, let alone ones with DHA.

The most important thing is to make sure you're eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. The vitamins are just supposed to be there to fill in the gaps.

    This!!!

  • I take Kroger bank prenatals too but the ones I take come in two bottles, one is the multi vitamin and the other is the dha supplement.  They come in a green package and they only cost $8.  Love them and have taken them from the beginning. I am sure everything will be fine.  There are plenty of women out there who done't take any vitamins at all.  I would contact your doctor if you are truly concerned.

  • I'd switch or add a DHA supplement. You and the baby will be fine but the added DHA can benefit both of you!

  • I think I read somewhere that it is most important to take DHA in the third trimester, since that is when the most brain development happens.  I say just start taking DHA now and you will be fine.

  • I have asked my peri about dha twice and everytime he told me the same that there's no solid evidence that dha can improve the baby's brain.  He told me to take 2 portions of palm size fish a week for omega 3 only.

    This!!!

I second "this"! My OB told me herself that she did not take any prenatals with either of her two children and they turned out perfectly fine. She also said that I don't have to take prenatals if I don't want to (as long as I'm eating a healthy diet, which I am), so I don't.

  • Don't stress about it. If you can obtain a prenatal vitamin with DHA in it then do so. I didn't have vitamins with DHA during my first trimester, and began taking some during my second. My doctor said it was ok as long as I had it by my third trimester. Either way, just think of how many years women took prenatal vitamins without DHA. I wouldn't worry too much.
