July 2012 Moms

So maybe the swaddling works a little too well...

Last week sometime, I stopped setting a "feed alarm" to make sure Taylor was fed every 3-4 hours because she always let me know when it was time, and everyone told me I was being ridiculous. Last night, I swaddled and fed her at 10:30 and immediately put her to bed. That little bugger didn't wake me up until 5:15 AM! My two-week old slept SEVEN HOURS straight. I would be dancing for joy over this but I can't imagine it's healthy for her to go that long without eating...? She didn't seem to act starved when she finally did wake me up, and we were able to get through a diaper change without her crying at all out of hunger before she was fed. I don't get it. I'm confused and feel like a pretty sh*tty mom.

I wouldn't worry - as long as she's eating enough during the day.  I have friends with babies who will get fed often in the evening before bedtime and the babes will sleep through the night or close to it, by design.

As long as she wasn't attacking you when you first went to feed her this morning, I'd count my lucky stars, hope it wasn't a fluke and enjoy the rest Wink

My 11 day old sleeps in 4 to 6 hour stretches and has been since she was born. She now weighs more than her birth weight so I don't worry about it too much.

Baby BOY is due May 23, 2014!

  • As long as she is back up to her birth weight, its fine to let her go longer stretches at night.

If she was hungry before then she would have woken up.

This for sure!  My LO is sleeping 3-4 hour stretches and sometimes will wake up only once at night.  The nurse from my Ped's office said that was fine!  Enjoy the sleep!

I also agree with this!  My LO eats a lot during the day and she goes to sleep for 3-4 hour stretches at night.  I don't think there is anything wrong with that, she is having lots of wet and dirty diapers and I am just glad we're getting decent sleep at night (for now)!

  • Lurker here.  I am a FTM and not even a mom just yet- so take it for what it is.

But I read a surprising article the other day that said your baby should not be sleeping more than 4 or 5 hours at a time too young for several reasons.  I can't remember all of them but I do remember two. 1)  If you are breastfeeding, you'll want to keep up your supply.  2)  If the baby is jaundice or has other issues causing exhaustion/fatigue, the baby may be too tired to wake himself up.

Just wanted to say, IMHO, I'd keep waking the baby up and ask the pediatrician next time you go in if it's ok to let him/her sleep longer.

ETA: here is the link to the article, sorry I don't know how to make it clicky.

  • Ada did this too - from birth! She's still alive and still in the 95% for height and 70% for weight.

STM- and I agree w/ this. My supply tanked bc DS was that jaundiced baby that didn't wake himself to eat. BF ended up not working out bc I could never get my supply back bc the first couple of weeks he would not wake up & would not eat.

FWIW, my pedi said specifically that over 4 hours was too long to go for a baby that young. I'd call your pedi and see what they recommend.

Bottom line - check with your pedi. IF your baby has jaundice (which I would guess isn't an issue since you didn't mentioned it), you should be waking her up. However, my baby had jaundice and was back up to his birth weight by 1 week old. The jaundice had cleared up by then too, so i was able to let him go longer at night.

  • Thanks everyone for your opinions! She doesn't have jaundice and should be back up to her birth weight by now eating as much as she does during the day! (I don't have a scale that will measure her, but our pedi appointment was a week ago and she had already gained several ounces since leaving the hospital.) Another thing I didn't mention is that she was awake and alert for longer time periods yesterday than normal, which may be why she slept so long last night. She might have just been just plain tuckered out!

Our pediatrician said she looked good enough to skip the two week weigh-in so we don't go in again until Sept. I think it's enough to warrant a call before then, though.
