Mexican food

I ate at a Mexican last night. I have quest bean dip and a cheese enchilada. Now I am freaking bc I remembered that Mexican cheese is on the do not eat list. I am seriously freaking out and starting to make myself sick over it. Advice? Did I do something bad?

Re: Mexican food

  • Nope you did nothing wrong. Eating it once and a while is not going to harm you or the baby!

  • Yes, you didn't invite us to eat Mexican food with you! What kind of cheese did you eat? Cheese is safe while pregnant. I believe you are only supposed to avoid soft cheese. The only soft cheese I can think of that Mexican restaurants would serve is the Oxacan cheese (like goat cheese). Unless you had this, I wouldn't worry about it. If you start feeling kind of funky (other than just m/s), there is a small chance the cheese had listeria, but it's pretty small. Drink lots of fluids today.

  • I re-read your post and there is no way they made your cheese enchilada with soft cheese unless you went to a really authentic restaurant. I have only had enchiladas with soft cheese when I was in Mexico and it was definitely a surprise lol. You are fine Big Smile

  • You are right, you should avoid Mexican cheese and queso.  However, you only ate it once, and in a small amount, you are totally fine!  Plus your cheese was in an enchilada and it was cooked which I think would kill the bacteria.  Don't worry!

  • Thanks everybody! Would I have known if it were soft? Would it have a distinct flavor?

  • I wouldn't worry about it! :-) Most restaurant's (unless they are authentic ethnic restaurants) use pasteurized cheeses. I still for the most part avoid soft cheese unless it's pasteurized, but I also still order bleu cheese salad dressing because 95% the dressing is gonna be made with pasteurized cheese. I only ask for clarification for when they sprinkle it on my salad (and the answer is usually "yes it is pasteurized"). So many rules and regulations have been listed for us as pregnant women that I truly believe the most they've done is caused a ridiculous amount of unnecessary stress. Enjoy your enchiladas!!

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34
  • It would have been similar to a feta cheese and they would not have heated it. Since you had enchiladas, I would say there is a 99.9% chance you didn't eat any soft cheese.

  • Sounds SUPER yummy to me!!! Mmmmmmmm!!

Maybe I'm not a very good pregnant person, but I eat all cheese. In fact I LOVE me some feta.

From what I understand they want pregnant women to stay away from non-pasteurized cheese.

In many states it is illegal to sell/produce "raw milk" products such as non-pasteurized cheeses. So it is VERY unlikely that a resturant would prepare their food with illegal or "taboo" cheeses.

When purchasing cheese at the store if it is pastuerized it will be labled that way and it is safe. Unless you are purchasing cheese at a specialty shop... well then... who knows.

Check out this link to reference your State's laws on the issue:

    https://www.realmilk.com/milk-laws-3.html

Do not eat soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, and Camembert, blue-veined cheeses, or Mexican-style cheeses such as queso blanco, queso fresco, and Panela, unless they have labels that clearly state they are made from pasteurized milk.

Sorry if this was an info overload, just thought I'd share! :)

  • I ate cheese enchiladas and queso dip weekly when pregnant with DS (ok not really weekly, but A LOT) and it was fine. Its not the right kind of cheese unless it was an authentic place.  Now I really want a cheese enchilada!!

  • I'm an ex-Californian, so I like my Mexican food authentic, and I'm not avoiding queso fresco - it's definitely pasteurized at the places I tend to go, so I'm not worrying about it.  I had some excellent tacos the other night!
