I haven't posted often on this board, but I have been encourage by everyone else's VBAC stories.
With my first, I was in labor for 30+ hours and pushed for 5 hours. The surgical team walked in just as I made some progress, so they called off the c/s. With my second I was in labor for 40+ hours and ended up having a c/s after stalling at 9 cm. Even after these difficult deliveries, the midwives and doctors I see were completely supportive of doing a VBAC.
On Wednesday, July 11, I woke up at 4 am and felt some little gushes. I ran to the bathroom and discovered that they were gushes of blood. It made me nervous, but it immediately changed to spotting, so I thought that it was just the start of labor. I showered and could feel my contractions picking up. I started timing them and they were 3 minutes apart, about 45 second long. I was thinking we were just getting started because both of my other labors had been so long.
After a few hours, the kids were both up and we prepared to go into town. I was going to spend the day at DH's grandma's house so that she could help me with the kids while DH went to work. She only lives a minute from the hospital, so we could get there quickly. As I was packing a few more things, I started to feel a lot more gushes and discovered that I was bleeding much more heavily and had clots. At this point I got nervous and right away called the hospital. My midwife called back immediately and told me to go right in.
We headed to town, dropped the kids off, and were immediately shown to L&D. I changed into a gown and they right away checked for the heartbeat. The nurse excitedly told us that it sounded strong. What a relief! Then there was a flurry of activity as two nurses tried to get an IV going, an ultrasound tech came to check for the cause of bleeding, and the lab came to draw blood.
Nothing was discovered as the cause of the bleeding. My midwife showed up and told me that I could either opt for a c/s right then or to wait it out and see if this was actually labor. If it wasn't, I would have to have a c/s because they won't induce VBACs. The thing I loved was that she really pushed not to do the c/s.
She checked me and I was at 2.5. We thought we were in for a very long wait. Because of the bleeding I had to stay on the monitors the whole time and would not be allowed in the tub. An hour later she came and said she wanted to put an internal monitor on the baby. When she did this, she punctured my water. After that, we spent the next couple hours watching game shows as the contractions picked up. I asked for an epidural at one point because it was hard to deal with the contractions while being stuck in bed.
By the time I got the epi and it started working, it was time to push. 14 minutes later our team green baby girl was born. I was in shock that it happened so quickly. They put her on my stomach, but I immediately had to have someone else grab her as I started to throw up. I got really dizzy but never passed out. I found out later that I lost a large amount of blood and didn't seem to be clotting right. Eventually they got the bleeding under control and I had to be on pitocin for the next 10 hours.
We came home two days later. So far recovery is so much better than with a c/s. I did tear, but I've already been out and about the last couple of days. I'm so thankful that I had a good support system. No one ever gave me a hard time about wanting to VBAC. The doctors and midwives were always encouraging about VBAC and never hinted that I should consider a c/s. In fact, they always pushed the risks of a c/s more than the risks of a VBAC. When my daughter was born, the midwife was so excited. She genuinely wanted this to work. If we have any more children, I will definitely be attempting another VBAC.
Re: My VBAC story!
Great story with such a supportive team! The bleeding must have been scary. Did you have trouble with that at your other births?
