I could use some advice...

Z had been coming along well with her communication. Not all of the words were correct (she used "boom" for food), but we understood what she was trying to say for the most part. She could say dada, hi, and a few others. Now she seems to have no words. She still understands us, and she is talking but it's all unintelligible and babbling. I am worried that she isn't using the words that she had anymore. Has anyone had any experience with this? With her 15 month appt coming up, I was wondering how concerned I should be.

  • Totally normal.  My girls will randomly go on little kicks of saying a word for a few days, and then I won't really hear it anymore.  I read that it is just a part of the learning process or something.

  • At her age I don't think it's uncommon. Ella stopped using words for a while and picked them back up again a couple of months later. I would mention it to your pedi if you are worried, but honestly I don't think you should worry too much about it.

Ella is 21 months and just now really starting to talk.

  • The only problem is that she isn't using any words now. Not even hi. She is only talkative when she is in the house or around me and my husband.

ETA: and the talking is just babbling in what we've started calling her alien language.

  • DD went through a phase like this when she became more mobile (climbing, running, jumping). She was talking in her own language, using more signs, and less spoken words. We had an EI eval done (at our request) at 18 months and we were told that she was fine. Talk to your pedi at her well check and see if you can talk to an EI specialist. Your DD could very well be focusing on other skills and putting communication aside for a bit.

I personally wouldn't worry about it too much.  Bring it up to the Pedi, but I am sure they will say it isn't anything to lose sleep over.
My girls definitely have their own language that they talk to each other in.  It is actually kind of freaky sometimes.

  • I hope that she is just focusing on other things then. She definitely understands us though. When recognizes what we are talking about. I can tell her that it's time to brush her teeth and she heads to the bathroom, I can ask her where her nose is and she knows what a nose is (though she points to mine) and she knows her feet, toes, ears, and belly. It's just her verbal communication that has changed.

If she is still fully understanding then I would guess that she's just working on other skills.

  • Is there anything I should do to try and get some verbal communication back or just let it go? Like instead of asking "where's my nose?", instead ask "What's this?" pointing to my nose. (that is what my sister suggested)

  • Sounds normal to me.  She checked that off her list & has moved on to other skillz.  She'll probably return to speaking in a short while.  I think they want some words by 18 months, but check with your pedi at her appt.  I'm positive they will tell you everything is fine though.

Totally normal. DS1 did that too and when he turned 2 it was like the faucet was turned on and left on, he talked constantly!

You can try this, but I know if it feels to them your drilling on it they get bored and don't want to talk. Sometimes as parents we drill without realizing it. I know my DD will be look at me like "It's a fuckings nose. It was a nose yesterday and it's a nose today" then storm off.

My child gets annoyed with me.

LOL too true! I don't want to be pushy. I feel much better knowing that it's normal. My husband keeps telling me not to worry, but I'm a natural born worrier and I tend to be wound a bit tight. I should really stop trying to compare Z to other children. On the plus side, she seems to really love music and dance right now. I guess that is where her focus is right now.

Maybe. DD stopped talking and learned how to spin in a circle when she is dancing. She's picked up talking a little again but I can't push it or she gets annoyed.

ETA: It's easy to forget that simple things like holding your head, clapping, walking, spinning and running, that we do everyday, are challenges to learn for our kids.

Yeah I didn't even consider that. Z just learned how to spin in a circle too. And also, sadly, how to blow bubbles in her milk with straws lol.

Thank you for the advice! I'm going to stop worrying and let her learn at her own pace.

  • Yeah, it's definitely easier to see things objectively from an outside perspective! Thanks again!
