Poop problems

So, since starting on solids, our little guy's poops look like adult poops- they are seriously huge and although they don't seem to be super hard, they are definitely firm and they hurt him to push out and he cries :( He had one yesterday that was about the diameter of a quarter and at least 5 inches long!! Is that normal??? He has had issues with constipation in the past, so since starting the solids I have tried pears, prunes, etc to keep things moving along, which seems to help, but it still seems like he is struggling with it. I just feel so bad for him! I just wanted opinions from others here to see if these "adult" poops are the norm,or not?? Thanks!

Re: Poop problems

  • Our little guy had issues this weekend. He was turning bright red in the face and head and all that would come out from all that work was a small-medium sized pebble. I called our pedi and they said prunes and prune-apple juice up to 4 ounces a day. I gave him prunes with every meal, mixed it in with his nightly oatmeal also, and gave him the Gerber Prune Apple Juice twice a day, plus whatever water he wanted. Since then he has had 2 good poops without a ton of work to get it out. Our pedi said pears, peaches, and sweet potatoes can also help. Hope that helps, good luck!

  • If it were me, I would take a picture of it with my phone and stop in the pediatrician's office while I was out one day.  (First Time Mom here though...)
Once a nurse or pedi has seen it, you can delete the picture.

Apparently, my toothpaste texture is not the same as our pediatrician's toothpaste.

J only pooped once a week - two weeks since birth (breast milk/formula - didn't matter) and the pediatrician was concerned that it was adult poo texture.  After much time trying to describe it, I just took a picture and that was SO much more helpful for her.

  • Margo was having constipation problems too.  It would be large in diameter and hard for her to push out.  She refuses any juice, and starting solids didn't help.  I began adding an extra half ounce, sometimes an ounce, of water to each of her bottles.  It has helped, and it is no longer hard.

Do you live in a dry climate?  I'm in arid Colorado and I think Margo was getting dehydrated.
