Anyone else's baby born tongue tied?

DS was born with a slight tongue tie.  It's not severe and while the ENT doctor came in and met with us in the hospital to check him out and offered to clip it while we were in the hospital, we passed at that time because we felt like we needed time to think about it.  DH has a slight tongue tie (they did say it is genetic) and his was never clipped because it never interfered with his eating or speech.

While I'd love to not put DS through anymore "snipping", we're still debating this.  If we are going to do it, I'd like to do it sooner than later.  But since it's not severe and he seems to be able to stick his tongue out I don't know that we SHOULD do it.

Anyone with a similar experience?

  • DD has it but they said it does not have to be clipped. I would do it if they offered. DH had to do speech therapy for it.

  • Connor had one.  We also declined in the hospital bc we wanted to research it since we never heard of it before.  We got it snipped at our 2 day visit mainly because he couldn't latch.  It was fast and I BFed immediately  after.  There was crying and a little blood but it beats spoon feeding him!

  • We did because ds's was pretty severe.  He actually still can't stick out his tongue.  We were worried about speech problems.  Surprisingly he was and is an excellent latcher.  We had it done at his 1 w ped appt and it was fast.

  • I had my DS done last week.  I found out that he had it at his follow up appointment from the hospital.  While he was not having any trouble latching it HURT really really bad.  I was prepared for some discomfort with nursing but, this was awful and nothing I ever experienced with DD.  The actual clipping lasted under a minute.  He did have some issues nursing for most of that day but, by evening everything was fine.

  • DD was severely tongue tied..right to the tip of her tongue.  I didn't even second-guess getting her snipped.  There are no nerves there so there was no pain. Besides, if she has issues later on in life (speech, etc) it's a whole "to-do" to get it fixed then.  So why not do it now and save the trouble.  :) Especially since there is no pain. Good luck!

  • DD was tongue tied, and it was actually the lactation consultant at the hospital that caught it. We had heard of it before, as my husband was also tongue tied at birth. We got hers clipped at an ENT at 4 days old because it was interfering with breastfeeding and could have caused speech issues later. She was a trouper--no blood, little crying, and a much better breastfeeding experience! It was worth it for us.

  • DS had slight tongue tie but we went a month not knowing it. We had horrible bfing problems as DS was not latching right and not getting enough milk causing lots of weight loss. The hospital finally checked for tongue tie and sure enough that was the problem. We got him clipped 2 days later...would have been the next day but it was the 4th of July...and I breastfeed right after he got clipped. It made a HUGE difference.
  • I had one and my parents didn't get it clipped when it was a baby because it didn't interfere with eating or my speech when I got older. However, when my adult teeth started coming in I had to get it clipped because it was pushing my teeth around and braces couldn't fix it.

So, just to let you know there are other reasons why you might want to get it done. It would have been much better if my parents did it when I was little. It was a whole operation at the hospital when I got older.

  • DS was tongue tied at birth and we had it clipped at 6 weeks (they didn't rush him in because he was gaining weight well).  We decided we didn't want to risk speech or teeth problems later on just because we didn't want to put him through that experience.  DS was thick and all the way to the tip of his tongue.  He cried and there was quite a bit of blood (the ENT Dr. said he bleed more than most because of how thick the tie was).  I wouldn't think twice about having it done.  That day he was a little fussy but the next day was back to his normal self.  They told us he would be completely healed within 48 hours and he was.

  • I was born tongue tied. I never was told until my daughter was born and she was tongue tied. My mom let mine untie on its own. However, like you I needed time to think about it.But she wasn't so lucky. At 3 months she had to get it clipped. It was painful for her and bleed a great deal. I wished I would of just done it in the hospital.
