DX "High maintenance baby"

We went in for an unscheduled check this week b/c LO has been so fussy, gassy, and had a rash all over his chest, neck, and scalp. Our pedi said the rash could be from a virus or heat but otherwise he is just in that 15% of babies that are "high maintenance." He made my mom so mad! We are thinking about changing pediatricians now for several reasons:

-The roll of paper that covers the exam table rests on the floor (yuck!)

-The pedi did not suggest trying anything different for the gas (different bottles, formula, etc)

-There is very little privacy in the office b/c the walls are so thin! We heard most of some girl's exam while we were there, and that happens every time.

-He's not open on Wednesday's, so if something comes up then, we have to go to a different pedi who doesn't have our LO's records on file.

-I'm not really offended by his comment about "high maintenance" but maybe I should be? It does seem like a convenient label to throw out rather than trying to pinpoint any problems or offer solutions.

  • It depends on whether you feel like he's listening to you or not.  It's definitely worth it to have a dr who you feel takes you seriously.

That being said, some babies simply are fussier than others.  I wouldn't be offended by that, but I can understand hoping that he would offer you some more solutions.  Maybe it's worth a second opinion.

  • I would change pediatricians. If my pedi called my baby high maintenance, I'd be annoyed. That comment is not helpful in any way. The pedi should have offered suggestions instead.

That combined with the other issues you are having with the pedi would definitely make me change. There are lots of good docs out there. Maybe you can get a recommendation from a friend or family member.

Totally agree. And while- yeah- some babies do require alot of attention, last time I checked, having gas isnt a personality issue.

    Good luck!
