Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What to do after the flight?

Hi ladies... Ftm here with some questions about travelling. I have 3.5 month old twins. So ive read several posts about how to fly with babies but im wondering what to once youve reached your destination. For instance we would like to visit dh's parents in texas so would we bring our carseat bases with us and install them in their car? And what about beds? What can i bring for them to sleep in? Sorry if my questions seem dumb...im just trying to avoid a logistical nightmare. Tia!

Re: What to do after the flight?

  • Most car seats can be installed without the bases, so personally I wouldn't take them (more stuff to try and travel with= pain in the a**). I would see if your in-laws could rent/borrow a couple of packnplays if you guys are only going to be there for a week or so. I would also recommend just taking enough diapers (plus a few extras) for the trip and buying a pack when you get there (same with baby wash and such).

  • Huh...i didnt know some carseats didnt need the bases... Is the graco snugride one of them? Thanks!
  • I think that I sprung for a convertible car seat when we traveled with DS1 when he was 6 mos old. We got a Scenera, which is inexpensive, but safe and used it as our 2nd convertible for DH's car and for travel.  I figured I wouldn't be as upset if it got damaged on the plane since it was less expensive than my infant seat or Britax convertible.

As for sleeping, we usually brought a pack n play, but that was before there were baggage fees.  See if anyone rents them down there or if your ILs know of anyone that they can borrow from.  You can also buy some when you get down there, sometimes you can find them inexpensively or you can get them at a consignment store.  Once you're done with them, you can sell them again or save them there for neices/nephews.

This exactly.  We just got back from a trip and we buckled the Graco Snugride into the car without the base.  It worked beautifully! My mom and DH's sil both bought Pack-n-Plays for Jane to sleep in.  My mom got one new because she figured she'd use it plenty through the years and my sil found one for a really good deal at a consignment store.  It was great and worked well!  I also second buying diapers/wipes and baby wash there!  Have fun on your trip!

Yes - they can be installed without the bases... I would not bring them either... so heavy.

  • we travel a lot by plane and so far we've always brought our Graco carseat+snap'n go frame along.  I believe all car seats have those catch pieces where you would thread the seat bellt and attach it without a base. Our Graco does that so I am assuming all other Gracos do too. The frame is so compact and super convenient too.

For sleeping, if we're flying and staying at a hotel we just ask for a crib in the room. If you're staying at someone's house you could bring a pack'n play or ask your in laws to buy an inexpensive version at walmart/target. Or maybe even on craigslist.

I haven't figured out how we're going to do things once K rides in her regular stroller and not in the carseat+frame... Might still bring the carseat for convenience but check it with luggage.

  • We use the carseat without the base when we travel. I'd just have your inlaws by a PNP to keep at their house since both twins can sleep in it together and they will use it when they are bigger too.

You might want them to check consignment shops for used ones to sleep in

When we travel we've used the Summer Infant Deluxe Travel bed from amazon but it's only big enough for 1 baby

  • We flew to VT and back for a week-long vacay when my oldest was 2. I know it's a bit different because your twins aren't able to sit in a seat. but the Graco Snugride does work without the base, you just strap it in like the "old days" and you can either ship a Pack N Play up there or have your parents buy one to keep there for them to sleep in.
