Puberty

BM and I have been discussing how we will break the news about puberty to SD.  She is 9 and already going through some minor changes.

Just wanted to recommend American Girl's "The Care and Keeping of You" book to any moms with girls about ready to start puberty.  It's clear explanations of everything from body odor to periods, and to me feels unbiased (openly acknowledges that not all girls shave their legs/underarms, will use tampons, etc...).

We will be giving SD her copy this Wednesday and then the three of us (SD, BM and myself) will discuss it at our next exchange.

    It's a great book for the personal hygiene aspects of puberty. The downside, or good part depending on your view, is that it doesn't speak to the bigger changes around social and emotional aspects of the tween/teen years. For that "It's Perfectly Normal". DS had the "What's Happening to My Body for Boys" which was also good. I liked that it included a short course on female puberty as well. I gave DS this book when he turned 10.

    Thanks!  Just sent the link to DH.  He and BM have already talked about that "the talk" needs to happen with SD soon (10, going into 5th grade).  She already uses deodorant, so this sounds like a great book to introduce more past that.
