Cloth Diapering

who cheats and uses sposies at night?

My DDs morning diapers reek of ammonia terribly!  She sleeps 11-12 hours at night and when i change her in the morning it burns my nose and throat.  It is so bad that I don't think it is safe for her to breathe that in at all.  I stripped and stripped or tried different diapers (I have some B4s and prefolds with doublers) but they are all the same.  Her diapers are clean out of the laundry, and don't smell bad when freshly wet so there isn't an ammonia problem per se.  I don't think there is any other solution other than sposies.  Any one else?

  • We use sposies at night. To be fair, we've never even tried cloth at night so I might not be the best example. I'm too chicken to try to find the right ON combo & I'm afraid of ammonia stink. I figure 1 sposie per day is fine.

  • I do for now.  We have a huge leftover Costco pack of sposies that someone got for us, and we have zero dollars right now to buy some good quality fitteds and a couple wool soakers.  So, sposies it is until my husband starts his permanent job (or we run out)!

I super hate the way they smell though.  I have to empty the nursery trash every single day because of ONE sposie in it.  Grr.

  • I use them at night but its to get through the stash I made before I decided to do cloth and I don't want to waste my money. Have you washed them with bleach at least once a month? I also add a small amount of white vinegar to my second rinse cycle every so often.
  • I do but only until my wool covers come off the needles. Then my plan is to use workhorses and wool. Sposies used to work fine ON but now that DS is getting bigger he leaks every night and its a PITA. I can't wait to get him into wool. :)

  • I also use sposies at night and never even tried cloth.  I read too much about needing to find the right set-up for overnights.  I didn't want to buy cloth diaper after cloth diaper looking for the right overnight solution.  I also don't have a problem with using that one disposable diaper per day.

  • We do too. Actually DS isn't a huge overnight wetter, sometimes he wakes up dry but I was afraid at the beginning. Now we use it as a time to put some balmex on him because he gets bad rashes. We also need to keep disposables on hand for our occasional sitter and when I take him to child watch at the gym so we need to have them around  sometimes.

  • I never understand why people use cloth at day and sposies at night!  There are sposies users who use cloth at night because it works so much better.  I'd definitely be trying a new washing routine or detergent before I gave up!

  • We only used sposies for a day in the hospital, and have been using cloth since coming home. I've never given it a second thought. When people say they haven't even tried cloth at night I wonder why...? If it works during the day, why wouldn't it work at night?

We use a BG 4.0 with the one size MF insert and a bamboo insert, or a fitted with cover (Flip usually). My LO usually wakes up 3-4 times per night to nurse and we don't change him. His diaper is super heavy in the morning but we've never had a leak.
