Re: Why do you CD?

  • cost.

we spent about $400 and have enough from birth to potty training. i guess i'm an odd one, i don't get caught up in the newest colors/patterns/styles. we love the fluffy butt, but they serve a purpose and are covered up by clothes 80+% of the time.

  • My initial reason was money. I have spent quite a bit (I think I added it up to around $700?) but I have a lot of diapers, which means they don't get used constantly, and will last multiple children. Also, they hold resale value. Totally saving money!

    Next up, cuteness.

And of course convenience! Convenience of not ever having to clean poop out of my LO's hair or clothes. Not having to give him an impromptu bath.  Not having to ever think about running out of diapers (I was when the wetbag is full. I have enough diapers to fill the wetbag twice...).

  • cost.  2 in diapers is expensive.  Both girls are on formula which is hard enough on the budget, so we needed to find a way to save some $$.  I bought some BG seconds before/during my pregnancy so that saved us some cash and then bought more after we decided we were for sure going to CD.  We have about 32 diapers and bet we didn't spend over $400 on the whole stash.

that's it.  Cute wasn't a factor.  Sometimes I honestly get annoyed at the bulk of CDs.

  • Cost was a big factor for us, and although we didn't go the least expensive route (all pockets or all in one's) we'll be saving a bunch in the long run especially if we end up having more kids.  The idea of big piles of diapers in landfills grosses out DH, so he was very much on board with the idea of having reuseable diapers.  And I love the cuteness factor.

ETA:  I should mention that we used disposables for a few weeks while waiting for DS to grow into our one sized dipes and had tons of leaks, blowouts, etc.  While I can't say that the CD's are leak free they certainly hold more than any disposable we used, and I've never had a major blowout.

  • Cloth diapers really hold in blowouts?  I honestly did not know this.  That would be awesome.  I hate it when I go to daycare and I see a little blue bag in his cubby (which means that he blew out onto his clothes) :(

In 7 months I've never had a blowout.  We have never had to change clothing due to poop (knocks on wood).  I have had a leak or two at the legs though.

  • *I thought it would be better for her skin to have cloth rather that disposables on. I also think it is too easy to let them sit in pee diapers when they're  in disposables. I know that I would still change her after all the daytime pees (that I notice) but I think it would be easier to slack off if she was in disposies.

    *less waste

That's all. I do use kirkland diapers overnight AND when I can tell there's a huge poop coming. I loathe cleaing up formula fed cloth diaper poops (any tips/tricks would be appreciated)

  • Cost was the biggest factor for us.  We spent about $250 so they have more than paid for themselves.  I love that they don't stink like sposies. (we went camping and I used sposies and WOW!  the smell coming from him was horrible.)  I've never had a leak, a blowout or diaper rash with them.

Is she strictly formula fed or are you on solids too?  If it's just formula throw that bad boy in the wash.  It dissolves.

If it's solids too, I say invest in a sprayer.  They are a lifesaver.  Swish/dunking didn't work for us.

If I could do it all over again, I would have CD...I have a boatload of disposable diapers ranging from size 1s to 4s that we bought before moving.

With DH, it's about the cost factor. If we were to have two more children, would starting to CD now save us money?

Also, this is probably a really stupid question, but when you are outside the home what do you do with a dirty diaper? Do you have to wash them right away?

Sorry if these questions are redundant...

Also, this is probably a really stupid question, but when you are outside the home what do you do with a dirty diaper? Do you have to wash them right away?  I wash dipes ever 2 days.  When you are out you put the dirty diper in a wetbag and add it to your other diapers when you get home.  Even if there is poop it can wait to be sprayed/dunked until you are home.  Nothing needs to be done immediately.

Sorry if these questions are redundant...

You told me to post more!  See comments above. Stick out tongue

  • We chose to CD because of cost and the environment. Although like PP said, that is debatable... We haven't spent very much, and we have saved a ton already. We started out with disposables but changes when DD was 3 months old, so we have seen the savings and also cut down on our waste.

I honestly didn't have a good reason for wanting to CD. I just plain wanted to do it. I like to be a little different. I convinced DH by the cost. I spent just over $200 for 28 so I think we achieved our cost savings goal. We got a few packs of disposables as gifts so we are using those when we go on trips. The cuteness is an added bonus!

She's breastfed, formula fed, and solids now.

Does the sprayer "over spray"? This was our concern

We have the BG spayer and it's pretty forceful so we just hold it further from the diaper.  I have yet to have poop end up on the floor/wall/etc due to over spraying.

  • We plan to have 1 or 2 more children and cost was a big issue for us. With the CDs that I've bought, I will save a lot of money if they make it through more than one child. Also, keeping all of those sposies out of the landfill was a huge contributor to our decision.

Once we started CDing I had some doubts, but as others have said, we NEVER have a blowout in CDs. That in itself, is reason enough for me. Smile

Also, the cuteness factor. I love that squishy little CD bum!

  • My original plan was to CD. Had entire stash. I worried though having a front loader and not being able to line dry. I also knew DC wouldn't CD so I sold my stash and did sposies. Fast forward 6 months and severe eczema on his testicles and we switched PT. He is in CD most of the time. He poops first thing in the morning. Once he poops he gets a CD till bedtime.

So, originally it was for the environment and cost savings. It then after education. Of washing and drying became for his skin. Once he starts DC in September he will be in sposies while there and CD at home and weekends. Better than nothing!

  • I just switched to cloth this week and I am in LOVE! Main reasons were the savings and I am not a fan of all the chemicals that can be in sposies.
  • The cute-factor :)

I also like the lack of chemicals and the savings vs. disposables.

I write this as Harry is in a Hawaiian print Huggies :). I'm washing all my CDs so I can take a stash picture.

Ditto all of this. Some if my in-laws and MH's friends were skeptical. We switched over to cloth at 3 months and I'm smug about proving the skeptics wrong.

  • Cost. We probably spent $300 but I plan to use them on multiple kiddos.

Cuteness and keeping landfills emptier were distant seconds, though still a factor.

  • Disposable diapers STINK to me... fresh out of the package they make me want to gag; once they're soilded, oh my goodness!  Bleh!  Chemicals...

My husband and I have very sensitive skin, I took a gamble that our children would too.  So far, it doesn't appear that our daughter has our skin issues, but in case she ever should, we should be good.

I also liked the fact that I will never have to buy diapers again for my children.  Unless I want to, assuming we treat our diapers well, I'll never have to spend more money.

  • The environment was a huge factor for me (really not sure how people see this as debatable when you look at how long it takes a sposie to biodegrade in a landfill).

They are super cute, sposies smell and feel gross, and cost (to some extent). I spent more than I originally intended to with a newborn stash, and OS dipes. I've made some mistakes with my purchases (but you don't know until you try). It's still way less than sposies over her life, and especially after kid #2 though!

  • We CD because of the money. Staying home makes us have a very tight budget, and I knew beforehand that if I wanted to stay home BFing and CDing had to be in our future. We will only increase the savings with each child we decide to have (we are thinking 3 kids, total).

The chemicals in the sposies (whenever DS wears them, he gets covered in gel beads, YUCK) and the nasty chemical smell of them are just another plus to not having to use them! I am glad to help out with the environment, but that certainly wasn't an initial thought. They are cute, too!

  • No chemicals on her skin was a big one. Cost and cuteness tie for second place :) I love the added perks of no blow outs and no diaper rash.
