Sleeping....Advice needed

My LO will be 8 weeks Wednesday....he's still only giving us about 4 hours of sleep at night, and 45 minutes of that is usually feeding him and getting him back down. Every mom I talk to tells me their 8 week old was sleeping 6-7 hours...so I'm wondering if there's anything I can be doing during the day to help him sleep more at night? Any recommendations? I've heard to let him sleep a lot during the day/but also to not let him sleep much. Feed him as much as possible, and don't wait until he's hungry, etc. So....I'm going back to work in a few weeks and I am dreading only getting a little sleep every night. Help! By the way....he's HATES swaddling, he has to have his hands out. Thanks!

  • Every baby is different. Try bath with lavender wash before bed, followed by feeding in a dark room and lavender spray around the crib

  • You are doing great--I promise!  4 hours of sleep at 8 weeks is very normal.  Remember that STTN is, by definition, sleeping at least one 5 hour stretch at some point during the night.  My LO sounds exactly like yours--slept about 4 hours at 8 weeks.  By 12 weeks, she was up to about 6-7 hours at a stretch, and now at almost 5 months, she is sleeping from 8 PM-4AM, wakes up for a quick feeding, and then back to sleep until 7 AM.  We tried to be consistent about a bedtime routine, put her down around 8-9 every night, make sure she had eaten every 2-3 hours during the day so that she wasn't trying to "make up" feedings at night, etc.  But I really think as babies mature, they just start sleeping longer, regardless of everything else we do as sleep-deprived parents to "help" them learn to sleep better.

Hang in there!  Your baby is PERFECTLY normal as far as his sleep patterns go--just look for gradually increasing stretches over the next few weeks.  IIKE!

  • Seriously I would follow his cues. 4 hours is not that bad. I think it is more common that babies don't start sleeping longer stretches as quick. I just think the moms who have sleepers do more gushing :)  My DD1 never slept those kind of stretches until she was closer to 1. We were ecstatic when we got 4 hour stretches.
