VBAC

If your OB allowed a foley bulb induction....

I feel like I have read that a few of you were allowed this. My OB is anti- medical induction, but we have not talked about using a foley bulb. I want to bring it up at my next appointment. I really had not given it much thought until about a week ago. My OB is allowing me to go until the 27th and then we will have the c/s. I still have some time to go on my own. I am just trying to get all of my options out on the table.

I had to go into L&D to be monitored on the 9th. I feel over a baby gate and landed on my stomach. Baby and I are fine and no harm was done. It was such really scary. The doctor that I saw in L&D was really nice and very enthusiastic about me trying for a VBAC. She is the one that brought up using the foley for a induction. She seems to think I would be a good candidate for it.

If you were allowed this "intervention" were you dilated at all? Was this a requirement from your OB?

  • You have to be slightly dilated for a foley induction or else they can't get the foley bulb in.  I wasn't dilated more than a fingertip and they weren't able to insert it, which is why we moved on to a pitocin induction.

    Definitely bring it up, though!

  • They can't get the bulb in if you aren't dilated, so I guess it is a requirement.  I had this done the first time and it worked like a charm.  I hope I don't get far enough to need it this time, but it is an induction option for me, along with low dose pit.

  • Thanks, ladies. I will bring it up with him Thursday. I hope to not need it, but I just want to keep my options open.

  • My OB was hesitant to do any medical inductions but did mention that he would be open to a foley bulb if the situation seemed appropriate for one.  I never ended up needing any induction as I went into labor naturally and had a vbac regardless, but my OB was open to the idea.

  • I had great sucess with a foley bulb induction. I had mine in for an hour and went from 1-2 cm to 4-5cm's. At then end of the hour my water broke and the catheter came out on its own.  All the nurses on the floor that day raved about how effective a technique it was.

My OB suggested the technique because for me to attempt a VBAC when I went in for my RCS I needed to be at least 2-3cm's and I wasnt. She said we could try this one last thing and if it didn't work we would be c/s bound.

I did get a epi before they started because I was nervous about extra pain.

I hope that it is something my OB will get on board with. I know every pregnancy is different, but with my son I never progressed further then 1cm. I have nine days until the c/s is scheduled. I go back Thursday and hope I have have some progress. I am willing to do anything to get her to come out on her own.
