help! problem with neighbors

So DH and i live in a small apartment while we save up to buy a house next summer. and our upstairs neighbor is extremely loud. not loud music or anything, loud STOMPING. all the time. day and night. She is probably 30-something and she has 3 kids that come stay with her sometimes. i dont think she has custody of them because they only visit a week at a time, but now that it's summertime they are there a lot more. they run, jump, drop things, and lord knows what else up there all day long and sometimes until 1:00 am. DH and i cant fall asleep, and the noise wakes LO up from her naps. very frustrating when you are an exhausted new mommy and sleep is hard enough. i have gone up there and talked to her twice and let her know it sounds like our ceiling is caving in. i was polite both times, but it hasnt helped. i even complained to management and they basically said there's nothing they can do. what should i do? ITS SO ANNOYING!!!!

Re: help! problem with neighbors

  • I am visiting my parents for the summer and am staying over there room. I have a four year old and a new baby. The four year old isn't used to having to be or walk quiet because at our house it isn't necessary. Well my parents sleep with two loud fans on and they can't hear a thing. So maybe either fans or ear plugs?

  • we sleep with a fan and the tv on sometimes, but it literally shakes the walls when they stomp and jump. it literally sounds like they are dropping bowling balls above our heads!
  • The last time I lived in a rental apartment there was something on our lease that required that at least 75% of the floor space be covered with area rugs. Both to protect the floor as well as to insulate from noise. I think this was a very common condition in our area at the time. Anyway, it was awful when our upstairs neighbors didn't put their rugs down!

Hope things get better for you soon.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, but honestly unless you can convince them to get more rugs, there's just nothing to be done.  My older child is not even three, but I'm sure he sounds like a freaking herd of elephants to anyone living below us and there's really nothing I could do about that.  Toddlers just walk really, really heavily.

  • This is kind of par for the course when you live in apartments. I would suggest relocating to a top-floor apt. Or get a sound machine.

  • I would talk to management about moving to a different apartment. There is not much you can do to control how they live. Possibly a sound machine or music might help with the noise.

  • We had a problem with loud neighbors too, they seem to think it's spring break everyday.  But for nap times I downloaded the sleepy sounds app on my phone and it works like a charm!  We use the white noise and I turn my phone volume all the way up to drown out all other noises and DS loves it!  One tip though, make sure when LO is napping the ringer is on silent or when you get a phone call it will definitely scare LO awake! Good Luck!
